Operation Pathways Awarded Significant Grants for Maryland Housing Initiatives

Operation Pathways, the resident-services branch of The NHP Foundation, has been presented with two crucial grants totaling $273,148 from the Maryland Affordable Housing Trust (MAHT). These funds aim to bolster self-sufficiency services at five affordable housing sites nestled in Frederick and Washington Counties.

The funding comprises $139,186 designated for resident services at Alexander House in Hagerstown and Overlook Manor Townhouses in Frederick. Additionally, $133,962 will enhance programming at three other locations: Calvin Mowbray, Stephen Camper Park, and The Residences at Pine Knoll. This financial boost is part of the MAHT's Round 51 grants for the State Fiscal Year 2026, which totaled over $5.3 million awarded to various organizations statewide—the highest in the Trust's history over its 33 years.

Ken White, the Executive Director of Operation Pathways, expressed that such investments empower resident-led initiatives, facilitating significant transformations in their lives. He emphasized that these grants allow residents access to essential tools, educational resources, and community partnerships necessary for long-term change.

Alice Pinderhughes, Chair of MAHT, recognized the necessity of these awards amid rising demand for affordable housing solutions throughout the state of Maryland. She noted that the growth reflected in the funding competition underscores the increasing need for comprehensive approaches to housing challenges within the state.

Maryland's Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary, Jake Day, articulated that each grant represents progress toward ensuring that every Maryland resident can find affordable housing. The funds are not only meant for self-sufficiency and support services but also encompass initiatives aimed at new housing construction and operational aid.

The Maryland Affordable Housing Trust has been dedicated to promoting affordable housing since its inception by the Maryland General Assembly in 1992. Its mission extends to households earning less than 50% of the area median income, with a preference for those making below 30%. This year, various organizations leveraging MAHT funding work jointly on projects to support homeless individuals and families, elderly residents opting to age securely in their homes, and initiatives promoting new affordable housing construction, among other critical efforts.
