Massachusetts Senior Medicare Patrol Workshops for Patient Safety Awareness Week
The Massachusetts Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Program is taking significant steps to raise awareness about patient safety during the week of March 9–15, 2025. This initiative coincides with the national Patient Safety Awareness Week, an event aimed at encouraging patients to become proactive in their healthcare decisions. The SMP Program is urging Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, along with their families and caregivers, to join a series of free workshops designed to better inform them about the pitfalls of healthcare errors, fraud, and abuse.
Understanding Healthcare Errors
Each year, countless patients experience the adverse effects of healthcare mistakes such as billing errors, incorrect patient records, and inappropriate medical treatments. These missteps can lead to misdiagnosis, unnecessary procedures, and in some cases, even worsen a patient's condition. According to the Massachusetts SMP Program, these issues underscore the importance of engaging in one's own healthcare journey. Through the workshops, attendees will learn to identify, report, and protect themselves from potential risks associated with their healthcare experience.
Lucilia Prates, the statewide director of the Massachusetts SMP Program, emphasizes that patient safety is fundamentally linked to transparency and an open dialogue between patients and healthcare providers. “Mistakes in healthcare can have serious consequences,” says Prates. “Empowering patients to ask questions and voice concerns fosters mutual respect and trust, vital for ensuring safety in the care they receive.”
Empowering Patients through Education
The upcoming workshops focus on various essential topics, including
The Cost and Consequences of Healthcare Errors, Fraud, and Abuse. Participants will be equipped with tools and knowledge to scrutinize their healthcare interactions actively. Fraudulent billing and deceptive practices are unfortunately prevalent, and understanding how to spot these issues is key. Attendees will be educated on how to analyze their Medicare Summary Notices and medical statements effectively and will learn how to handle any discrepancies or questionable charges.
The Massachusetts SMP Program is hosting these vital workshops at several locations throughout the state:
- - Monday, March 10, 1 PM – East Boston Senior Center
- - Wednesday, March 12, 1 PM – Ipswich Senior Center
- - Wednesday, March 12, 1:30 PM – Longmeadow Council on Aging
These events are not just limited to a single day or location. The SMP is dedicated to providing ongoing educational presentations across the Commonwealth, ensuring that communities have access to the resources they need. Those interested in finding a workshop in their area can visit

A Collaborative Approach to Patient Safety
The Massachusetts Senior Medicare Patrol Program operates as part of a larger national initiative that seeks to empower healthcare consumers. By collaborating with government agencies, non-profit organizations, and community advocates, the program extends its reach and effectiveness. Volunteers trained to promote awareness play a crucial role in this mission, providing the support and guidance beneficiaries need to navigate their healthcare landscapes safely.
For those looking to schedule a presentation or obtain further information on the program, they can contact Lori Laviolette at (978) 946-1278 or reach out via email. With the support of the Administration for Community Living (ACL) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the SMP is fully funded to help ensure beneficiaries can access the resources they require.
Through these workshops, the Massachusetts SMP Program not only acknowledges Patient Safety Awareness Week but actively participates in the movement towards a more informed, patient-centric healthcare system. Together, we can build a safer future for all patients by promoting awareness, dialogue, and empowerment in healthcare.
