Hitachi and Bloom Energy Collaborate for On-Site Power Supply Solutions
In a significant move towards enhancing the energy strategies in Japan, Hitachi Ltd. has recently announced its collaboration with Bloom Energy Corporation. This partnership aims to deliver innovative on-site power supply solutions that leverage fuel cell technology to meet the increasing energy demands from data centers and industrial customers.
Utilizing Expertise for Energy Solutions
Hitachi, known for its extensive experience in system integration within the energy and industrial sectors, will focus on the design, construction, and operational support of these solutions. On the other hand, Bloom Energy will provide its highly efficient fuel cells, renowned for their rapid deployment capabilities and technical support. This partnership aims to ensure a seamless integration with existing customer systems, utilizing Hitachi's operational technologies (OT).
Given the rising demand for electricity in Japan, especially prompted by the rapid expansion of AI and data centers, it becomes increasingly crucial to secure a stable and decarbonized power supply. Fuel cells present a compelling alternative as they offer high resilience, rapid implementation, and consistent operation.
Promising Results from Omiya Testing Facility
Before this announcement, Hitachi conducted a proof of concept at its Omiya facility in Ibaraki Prefecture. This involved the integration of Bloom Energy's fuel cells with Hitachi's control systems. The tests confirmed the fuel cell's high generation efficiency and the effectiveness of Hitachi's systems in monitoring and regulating output from external sources. With this technology, flexible output adjustments based on power demand and easy scalability for multiple units are achievable.
The Omiya facility serves as a core base in the 'Next-Generation Future City Co-Creation Project,' a collaboration between the Hitachi City and Hitachi Ltd., focused on utilizing digital technologies to address regional challenges, specifically promoting a 'Green Industrial City.'
Meeting Industry Needs
For Data Centers:
The rising electricity demand driven by AI integration showcases how efficient fuel cell technology can meet these challenges. Established on-site power solutions will empower data centers with low-carbon options that ensure resilience against traditional grid limitations. With rapid deployment capabilities, customers will be able to secure their necessary power supply, allowing for stable business operations.
For Industrial Applications:
Within power-intensive industries, including manufacturing and critical infrastructure, the integration of Bloom Energy's fuel cell systems can significantly reduce energy costs while ensuring uninterrupted production. Utilizing urban gas, biogas, or hydrogen as fuel sources offers stability and sustainability. Additionally, Hitachi's control technology optimizes electrical supply for entire factories, thus providing ongoing support during outages, which in turn enhances corporate resilience and BCP (Business Continuity Planning).
Future Exhibitions and Innovations
The collaboration between Hitachi and Bloom Energy will be prominently featured at the upcoming Hitachi Social Innovation Forum 2026 JAPAN, taking place from September 3-4, 2026. Attendees will find insights into achieving green data centers through next-generation energy solutions at the exhibition area.
