Steven Barlam Takes Helm as New President of the Aging Life Care Association

The Aging Life Care Association® (ALCA) has announced a significant leadership change as Steven Barlam, MSW, LCSW, CMC, officially steps into the role of President of the Board of Directors, effective January 1, 2025. This transition marks an important milestone for both Barlam and the organization, reflecting a commitment to advancing the standard of care provided to older adults across the United States.

Having been a prominent figure in aging care for over three decades, Barlam succeeds Kate Granigan, who will continue to contribute to the Board as Past-President. Barlam expressed his heartfelt gratitude and eagerness to lead the association during a crucial period for their profession. "I am truly honored to step into this role and lead ALCA during such a pivotal time for our profession," he stated. His vision for the upcoming year centers on elevating the Aging Life Care™ profession, enabling all members to deliver the best possible support to those they serve.

Steve Barlam brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience as a Certified Care Manager and Licensed Clinical Social Worker. He currently serves as the CEO of JFS Care, which speaks to his hands-on experience and adept understanding of the challenges faced within the field. Guided by the motto, "It has to be good enough for my mom," Barlam's philosophy underscores the importance of high-quality care, not just for clients but also for their families

In his new role, Barlam aims to engage with ALCA members and advocate for the significance of Aging Life Care Managers® in navigating the complexities of the healthcare system. He recognizes the critical nature of their work in addressing the evolving dynamics of aging and the emotional and physical toll it takes on families and individuals alike. "Our work has never been more important as we help individuals and families address the changing dynamics of aging," he highlighted. He emphasizes their collective commitment to providing guidance, ensuring that all individuals receive the support and care they rightfully deserve.

During his one-year term, Barlam will work alongside an esteemed Board of Directors made up of 11 professional Aging Life Care Managers from various states, each bringing their own expertise to the table. The team also includes leaders like Nina Pflumm Herndon, who serves as President-elect, and Lina Supnet-Zapata, the Treasurer, along with several other dedicated professionals.

The Aging Life Care Association, formed in 1985, is dedicated to ensuring dignified and coordinated care for older adults across the United States. Its members come from various backgrounds within the healthcare sector, including nursing and social work, reflecting a commitment to support families facing challenges related to aging and caregiving.

To become a member, professionals must meet rigorous educational and certification standards while also committing to a Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, thus distinguishing themselves from other geriatric care managers in the industry. As society continues to face an increasing aging population, the mission of ALCA has never been more relevant. ALCA encourages anyone needing assistance with aging issues to find support through their members, who are equipped to provide exceptional care planning, assessments, and family guidance.
