JAPAN SUI COLLECTION in Kyoto: Unveiling the Essence of Japanese Beauty and Tradition

The JAPAN SUI COLLECTION took place on November 14-15, 2025, at the Kyoto State Guest House, organized by the Cabinet Office of the Japanese government. This remarkable event aims to present traditional Japanese craftsmanship, regional specialties, and unique products to a global audience that remains largely unfamiliar with these hidden gems. This initiative is more than just a showcase; it’s a celebration of Japan’s cultural heritage, artistry, and culinary delights.

An Overview of the Event

The gathering saw influential figures from Europe and other regions coming together to experience the beauty of Japanese aesthetics, ranging from artisanal crafts to culinary arts and live performances. The event featured around 60 displays of traditional crafts, creative culinary offerings, and performances like Noh theatre and fashion shows.

Venue and Design

The Kyoto State Guest House, built for foreign dignitaries, harmoniously blends with the historic scenery of Kyoto. Its architectural style, reflected in its “Irimoya” half-hipped roof and “Sukiya-zukuri” design, draws inspiration from the traditional Japanese teahouse, showcasing the highest level of Japanese craftsmanship.

Craft Exhibitions

Over 60 works of art were presented under four themes: regional heritage, modern interpretation, contemporary design, and the striking “Wow factor.” Items such as Wajima-nuri lacquerware, Kutani-yaki ceramics, and Hakata dolls were prominently exhibited. Guests admired the intricate techniques, natural materials, and strong regional identities showcased in these crafts.

Culinary Highlights

A fashion show curated by Junko Koshino, alongside a traditional “Kyogen” comedy performance, brought Japanese performing arts to life. Attendees enjoyed a meticulously crafted menu featuring high-quality ingredients like Yamagata Wagyu beef and Oma tuna, prepared by Chef Hiroshi Nagashima, paired with exquisite sake.

Art of Tea

A teacher from the Mushakoji-Senke school conducted a tea ceremony, showcasing various tea utensils, including Takayama chasen and local ceramic bowls, which illustrated the richness of Japanese craft. The event was further elevated by Ikebana flower arrangements in the Ikenobo style and a bamboo installation by the esteemed Tanabe Chikuunsai IV.
