Aflac's Special Duck Program Brings Joy to Children Battling Cancer
In a heartwarming event held in the Sacramento Valley, Aflac Incorporated has committed to enhancing the lives of young cancer patients by donating cuddly robotic companions, known as My Special Aflac Duck, to children undergoing treatment. This initiative, celebrated on November 21, 2024, saw nearly 200 ducks distributed to Keaton's Child Cancer Alliance in Roseville, marking an important milestone in Aflac’s ongoing support for pediatric cancer.
Over the last two years, this program has seen an overwhelming response, with more than 33,000 ducks distributed since its inception in 2018. Each duck serves not just as a playful companion, but also as a valuable tool that helps young patients cope with the complex emotions and procedures associated with cancer treatment.
In a poignant statement from Ines Rodriguez Gutzmer, Aflac's Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer, she noted, "Approximately 26 children are diagnosed with cancer each day in the United States. These incredible children, and their families, embody determination and resilience... Together, we're making a difference."
The Power of My Special Aflac Duck
The My Special Aflac Duck is more than just a toy; it is a social robot equipped with innovative technology that aids children in managing their feelings, preparing for medical procedures, and practicing distraction techniques. Designed in collaboration with families, children, and medical professionals, this duck has proven effective in alleviating distress, nausea, and anxiety associated with medical treatments.
A three-year study assessing the impacts of the duck found that young patients who interacted with the companion reported significant reductions in procedural anxiety compared to those who had not yet received one. Parents and caregivers, too, noted decreased stress levels, underscoring the duck's role in creating a supportive environment for families navigating the challenges of pediatric cancer.
Operation Gobble Collaboration
The duck delivery day coincided with Keaton's annual Operation Gobble event, where more than 20 families received Thanksgiving meal kits. Jessica Alonso, Executive Director of Keaton's Child Cancer Alliance, expressed gratitude for the partnership with Aflac, stating, "This generous contribution of My Special Aflac Ducks will have a meaningful impact on the children we serve. These comforting, interactive companions provide emotional support and help children navigate the complexities of treatment, bringing much-needed smiles and strength to families."
Recognition and Impact
Since its launch, My Special Aflac Duck has received numerous accolades, including a spot on Time Magazine's list of 50 Best Inventions. It has also garnered awards at prestigious events like CES and South by Southwest. This initiative is a key part of Aflac's commitment, which has exceeded $184 million towards supporting pediatric cancer treatments and community outreach.
