Ortega® Celebrates Taco Culture with the Launch of Seis de Mayo Holiday
Ortega, a renowned name in the world of Mexican food products and the leading taco sauce brand in the United States, has formally announced the creation of a vibrant new holiday—Seis de Mayo—set for May 6 each year. This festive day aims to keep the celebratory spirit alive following Cinco de Mayo, encouraging taco enthusiasts to continue their celebrations with family and friends.
The Energy of Seis de Mayo
According to Ellen Schum, Executive Vice President of BG Foods, the concept behind Seis de Mayo stems from the desire to transform the day after Cinco de Mayo into a festive occasion worthy of attention. While many brands become less vocal after Cinco de Mayo, Ortega intends to sustain the excitement and fun that come with Mexican-American food culture. By offering engaging events and community-centered activities, Ortega seeks to demonstrate that taco celebrations can continue throughout the year.
Celebrations Kicking off in Chicago
Ortega is set to launch Seis de Mayo with a lively event in Chicago on May 6, featuring taco truck pop-ups in two prime locations:
- - Pioneer Court: From 5:30 AM to 10:30 AM, Ortega will serve breakfast tacos to the first 750 morning commuters.
- - Wrigleyville: From 4 PM to 7 PM, fans will get an exclusive first taste of the Chicago Taco Dog, a unique collaboration with Food Network Celebrity Chef Kelsey Murphy.
At both locations, the highlights will include appearances by Brotega, Ortega’s vibrant brand character, who will energize the crowd, offer photo opportunities, and embody the spirit of the fiesta.
Introducing the Chicago Taco Dog
The Chicago Taco Dog is a creative twist on the iconic Chicago-style hot dog. It incorporates all the classic fixings but is nestled within an Ortega taco shell and drizzled with Ortega taco sauce. Importantly, it remains true to Chicago’s culinary tradition by excluding ketchup. According to Schum, launching in Chicago is a natural fit due to the city’s enthusiasm for food, sports, and community celebrations.
Further Engagement Through The Seis 50
Alongside the taco truck events, the Chicago Taco Dog will lead into further digital recipe inspirations. Ortega is introducing “The Seis 50,” featuring tacos inspired by classic American dishes from all 50 states. This initiative aims to encourage consumers nationwide to celebrate Seis de Mayo at home, transforming ordinary meals into taco-filled festivities. Furthermore, Ortega plans to run a special buy one, get one free promotion on select products from May 5-6 at participating retailers, making it easy for everyone to join in the fun.

To amplify the community experience, fans are encouraged to share their Seis de Mayo celebrations via social media using the hashtag
