St. Louis Town Hall Event Addresses Prostate Cancer Disparities with Local Experts and Survivors

St. Louis Town Hall Aims to Bridge Prostate Cancer Disparities

On August 26, 2025, the Prostate Conditions Education Council (PCEC) is set to hold an impactful Town Hall meeting in St. Louis, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the University of Health Science Pharmacy. This free community event aims to focus on the alarming disparities related to prostate cancer, particularly among high-risk groups in the St. Louis area. Attendees will hear from local experts, survivors, and community leaders, who will share their insights, experiences, and actionable steps to tackle this pressing health issue.

Addressing the Disparities

Statistics reveal a disturbing trend: Black men are nearly twice as likely to succumb to prostate cancer compared to their counterparts in other demographics. This disparity has raised the urgency for community-driven discussions aimed at overcoming the obstacles in access to timely health information and support. "Bringing the community together like this is powerful," shared Mellve Shadid, a local prostate cancer survivor and advocate. "We need open conversations, access to information, and support especially for Black men who are at greater risk. Early detection is the best protection."

Voices of Experience

Among the highlights of the event will be a panel featuring esteemed physicians and survivors who have faced the struggles associated with prostate cancer and can offer unique perspectives on survivorship. Notable panelists include:
  • - Dr. Arnold Bullock - Professor of Urologic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine.
  • - Dr. Hiram Gay - Professor of Radiation Oncology at Siteman Cancer Center.

With insights from these professionals, attendees will have the chance to engage in informative discussions about prevention, early detection strategies, and treatment options available for prostate cancer.

Empowerment through Education

One of the major themes of the Town Hall is the importance of education and early detection in combating prostate cancer. Cara Clements from PCEC emphasizes, "Education and early detection are the strongest tools we have to fight prostate cancer. We're proud to partner with the St. Louis community to ensure every man, regardless of race or background, has access to lifesaving knowledge and care."
