Celebrating Paralympics Month in Tokyo

Tokyo is gearing up to celebrate its connection to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, designating August and September as the 'TOKYO Paralympics Month.' This initiative involves a series of exciting paralympic events aimed at promoting para sports and making them more accessible to the public.

In its fifth anniversary year, the program will feature various opportunities for residents and visitors to experience para sports firsthand. These events will take place in numerous shopping malls and public squares around the city, including the popular 'Street Para Spot' initiative, which invites everyone to engage in sports regardless of their abilities.

Engaging Activities for Everyone

The highlight of the month will be the chance to participate in multiple activities designed for ease of access.
1. Street Para Spots: Participants can enjoy experiencing two types of para sports and interact in unique understanding programs, such as 'Blind Ball Toss' and 'Blind Shopping Experience.' These activities will deepen understanding of daily challenges faced by individuals with disabilities while also being conveniently located for shopping trips. All experiences are free with no prior registration required.
2. Paralympic Comics Exhibition: Special comic panels from renowned Japanese manga artists will be displayed at Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building to showcase summer Paralympic sports. This exhibition is scheduled from August 25 to August 30.
3. Para Sports Recreation Area: An open space for everyone, offering various exercise programs tailored to the needs of participants.
4. TOKYO Universal Walking 2026: An app-based walking initiative, allowing everyone to join in a barrier-free adventure. This will be available from September 1, running through February 28, 2027.
5. TEAM BEYOND Booth: This booth at the H.C.R. 2026 International Welfare Equipment Exhibition will showcase the latest in welfare technology as well as provide hands-on para sports experiences.

Paralympic Tribute and Volunteer Recruitment

As a tribute to the spirit of the Paralympics, select landmarks in Tokyo will be illuminated with the colors of the iconic three agitos from August 24 to September 5.

Additionally, there will be recruitment for volunteers interested in supporting para sports. Training courses will take place to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge for inclusive activities. Interested volunteers may register through the Tokyo Sports Volunteer Information System until July 22.
