Historic First LNG Production at Plaquemines LNG
On December 16, 2024, Venture Global made a remarkable announcement regarding its operations at the Plaquemines LNG facility located in Port Sulphur, Louisiana. The company successfully achieved its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) production at this site, marking a significant milestone in the LNG industry. This development is particularly notable as it occurred just 30 months after the Final Investment Decision (FID) was made, positioning Plaquemines LNG as one of the fastest newly constructed LNG projects to reach production status. Alongside this facility, Venture Global’s earlier establishment at Calcasieu Pass shares this commendable distinction.
Venture Global's CEO and co-founder Mike Sabel emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, "Venture Global takes pride in having a top-notch team dedicated entirely to our mission of innovating and providing reliable, low-cost LNG to the world. This dedication and hard work are pivotal in meeting the growing energy demands of our allies and enhancing global energy security. Successfully reaching the first LNG production at Plaquemines will solidify the United States’ status as the world’s leading LNG exporter."
The Plaquemines LNG project is designed with a nominal capacity of 20 million tons per annum (MTPA). The endeavor not only reinforces U.S. energy exports but is also expected to contribute positively to the local economy by creating jobs and supporting community initiatives. With an estimated investment of $50 billion in various U.S.-based energy projects, Venture Global aims to strengthen its foothold in the market while ensuring the provision of much-needed U.S. LNG supplies to its allies.
Significantly, Plaquemines achieved a Final Investment Decision (FID) for Phase One in May 2022 and Phase Two in March 2023. What sets this facility apart is Venture Global’s unique construction and configuration strategy, which allows for the continuous production and export of LNG even while the remaining 36 production trains and associated facilities are still under construction and commissioning. This strategic approach is expected to unlock substantial additional U.S. LNG supply years before any other new providers can enter the rapidly growing global market.
This incremental LNG supply has proven to be a valuable geopolitical asset for the United States, especially during times of historically tight global LNG markets and project delays.
