ASICS Basketball Dream Project: A New Era for Junior Athletes in Japan

ASICS Basketball Dream Project 2026: A New Initiative for Junior Athletes

The ASICS Basketball Dream Project aims to nurture the next generation of basketball talent in Japan. On July 25, 2026, this innovative initiative held its inaugural event at Waseda University’s Waseda Arena in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The event saw participation from eight professional athletes, including Yuta Watanabe, who together with around 80 junior athletes, embarked on a journey of teamwork and personal growth.

About the ASICS Basketball Dream Project 2026

The ASICS Basketball Dream Project serves as a platform for aspiring junior athletes to connect with professional players who form the ASICS family. The aim is not just to enhance athletic skills but to inspire teens and young athletes to reflect on their aspirations and tackle new challenges. The day’s events were filled with insightful discussions and engaging basketball drills, offering participants a chance to learn from their idols.

Opening Session: Sharing Summer Growth Stories

The event kicked off with a talk session involving both junior participants and ASICS family members. Each professional athlete shared experiences and summer anecdotes from their youth. For instance, player Harimoto revealed, “Due to a long season, I took time to refresh in Korea, watching Watanabe's games. It’s essential for both my mind and body as I prepare for the new season.” Such exchanges fostered a relatable atmosphere and motivated students to embrace their growth journeys.

Introducing the DREAM SHEET

A highlight of the event was the introduction of the DREAM SHEET, a collaborative worksheet where the ASICS family and junior athletes outlined personal goals and action plans for the summer. Participant Kurokawa stated his aim is to improve his left-hand skills, while Shinoyama set his sights on mastering right-handed dribbling. Watanabe declared his focus on entering the new season in optimal condition by maintaining balance till the season begins at the end of September.

Shoe Talk and Q&A: Selecting the Right Fit

During the session, players also discussed the importance of choosing the right basketball shoes based on individual playing styles. When a participant asked about the athletes' sneaker habits, Watanabe shared, “I prefer to wear new shoes, so I never wear the same pair for two consecutive games,” emphasizing the need for comfort and performance tailored to personal preference. Kurokawa highlighted his choice of lightweight SWIFTACE series shoes for agility while opting for the more cushioned NOVA SURGE when needing extra support, showcasing the diversity of shoe choices based on personal playing conditions.

Pickup Games: Competing with Role Models

The atmosphere shifted to exhilaration as participants engaged in pickup games alongside ASICS family members. With real-time commentary from pro players, the games were intense, fostering a competitive spirit. Shinoyama exemplified his commitment by attempting right-hand shots, demonstrating a direct alignment with the goals set in the earlier sessions. This unique opportunity allowed young athletes not only to learn but also to compete directly with the stars of basketball.

Reflections on the DREAM SHEET

Throughout the event, participants filled out their DREAM SHEETS to help visualize their goals. The process encouraged them to express their aspirations and develop actionable steps to reach their objectives. Feedback from participants highlighted how the experience cultivated a deeper understanding of their playing styles while learning vital skills from professional athletes.

The Summer Challenges of the ASICS Family

Each player from the ASICS family shared their personal challenges for the summer:
  • - Kato Takuto: Learning body control to improve defense, driving, and shooting.
  • - Kurokawa Kotetsu: Enhancing left-hand skills.
