Discover the Essence of Farming in Joetsu
Join us on an unforgettable journey to Joetsu, Niigata, from May 31 to June 1, 2025. Organized by Palsystem Tokyo, this unique experience combines traditional farming techniques with authentic local culinary delights. Participants will embark on a tour that involves rice planting and making soba while gaining insights into the local agricultural practices of the region.
Travel Itinerary
The adventure begins at Tokyo Station, where participants will take the shinkansen (bullet train) to Joetsu Myoko Station. From there, a short 30-minute bus ride will take you to JA Echigo Joetsu’s rice fields. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by local rice producers from the Keihoku Eco-Rice Research Association, who will share their knowledge and guide you in planting rice.
Once you step into the rice paddies, you’ll be planting new varieties, specifically the “Mizuhono Kagayaki”, right from the source. The experience is hands-on and will allow participants to connect with the earth and understand the agricultural process.
Connecting with Nature
After planting, participants will have the opportunity to explore the biodiversity of the rice paddies. You’ll search for creatures like water striders and frogs, and assess their numbers and types, creating a deeper connection with the ecosystem nurtured by sustainable farming methods. This hands-on exploration of local wildlife will showcase the benefits of environmentally-conscious agriculture.
Culinary Delights Await
Following a rewarding day in the fields, you will unwind at the Sky Topia Yuland, a renovated facility from a retired school in Joetsu. Here, you will enjoy a hearty meal prepared with the eco-rice and local ingredients, allowing for a true taste of the region's flavors. This dinner features local sake from Yoshikawa Tokubetsu, a prominent brewery in the area, which actively engages in promoting local rice production.
During this communal dining experience, both producers and participants will have the opportunity to express their appreciation for the food and the effort put into its production. It’s a unique chance to share stories and establish bonds that promote understanding between cultivators and consumers.
The Soba Making Experience
On the second day of the tour, participants will dive into the traditional art of making soba noodles that incorporate Joetsu’s famous yam. The yam acts as a natural binding agent, resulting in a uniquely textured and filling soba. You’ll learn the entire process from kneading the dough to cutting and boiling the noodles, transforming a simple ingredient into a delightful feast. Participants will also be able to take home the soba they make, allowing them to reflect on their learning experience.
Building Connections Through Agriculture
Palsystem Tokyo has been strengthening ties with local producers since 2001, reinforcing its commitment to the “basic agreement on food and agriculture” alongside JA Echigo Joetsu and Yoshikawa Tokubetsu. This collaboration aims to ensure safe and secure agricultural practices while enhancing the exchange between producers and consumers.
With joint efforts between cooperatives, local governments, and community members, the program highlights the importance of sustainable agricultural practices and the cultivation of mutual respect for our food sources. Every year, numerous activities like rice planting, sake brewing, and cooking classes are organized, creating platforms for community connection and education.
As we approach the International Day of Cooperatives in 2025, Palsystem will continue to leverage its initiatives to strengthen the cooperative spirit between producers and consumers, aspiring to enhance sustainable practices in our daily lives.
Conclusion
Immerse yourself in the agricultural charm of Joetsu, where you can plant rice, learn to make delicious soba, and enjoy the flavors of local sake. This experience not only celebrates the bounty of the land but also fosters understanding and appreciation between those who grow and consume food.
