Setting New Standards in Neonatal Training Across Europe: Certified Master Program in Neonatology

Redefining Neonatal Education

The European School of Neonatology (ESN) has recently achieved a significant milestone in the field of neonatal education by officially certifying its Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) program in Neonatology with the Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA). This program has not only garnered the esteemed FIBAA quality seal for accredited professional development courses but has also received the "Excellence in Digital Education" award.

At the 2026 ESPR Congress held in Geneva, the focus was on networking and knowledge transfer among young and experienced scientists. This comes at a time when neonatal survival rates and healthcare services across Europe remain inconsistent, with alarming discrepancies in certain regions. According to the latest Euro-Peristat report on newborn health, the neonatal mortality rate in Europe varies significantly, ranging from less than one to over four deaths per 1,000 live births.

The differences in European standards for neonatal care and specialty training are stark, making it imperative to enhance and harmonize medical training to lower mortality rates and ensure consistent, high-quality care for every newborn across the continent.

The ESN's MAS in Neonatology has been designed specifically to address these challenges. This online-based postgraduate training program caters to young physicians specializing in neonatology. It is the first of its kind to combine flexible academic learning with practical, workplace-based training, aligning with the European Training Requirements (ETR) in Neonatology. The program equips healthcare professionals with the necessary skills to assume leadership roles in neonatal care while aiming for the harmonization of educational standards and patient care across Europe.

The FIBAA certification confirms that the MAS in Neonatology meets the highest international standards regarding teaching quality and pedagogical concepts. The separate accolade for outstanding digital learning platform further solidifies the program's innovative approach. The certification establishes the ESN’s MAS as a high-quality example of medical education that bridges theory and clinical practice, promoting the ESN's mission to enhance professional neonatal care in Europe and beyond.

Professor Sven Wellmann, Director of the ESN and Head of the Department of Pediatric Intensive Care and Neonatology at the KUNO Clinic St. Hedwig in Regensburg, Germany, emphasized the significance of this certification. “We are very pleased that FIBAA has recognized both the academic quality and the digital innovation of our program. This certification bolsters our efforts to provide the next generation of neonatologists with an accessible and high-quality education.”

Silke Mader, co-founder and chair of the Global Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (GFCNI), congratulated ESN, saying, “Congratulations to ESN for this important milestone! The certification of the MAS in Neonatology represents a significant advancement for both neonatal care and the families involved. Hospitalized newborns and their parents deserve the highest medical expertise as well as compassionate, family-centered support during some of life’s most challenging moments. By integrating these principles into a standardized training program, ESN helps ensure that families are included as partners in care and supported at every step.”

About the European School of Neonatology (ESN)

The European School of Neonatology is an educational initiative of the European Society for Paediatric Research (ESPR). This non-profit initiative is committed to the advancement of neonatal care through high-quality, accessible postgraduate education. ESN programs are developed by leading experts across Europe and prioritize professional relevance, quality assurance, and equal access to high-quality neonatal training. The data on neonatal mortality comes from the Euro-Peristat Project's core indicators of perinatal health in the European Union, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland, published in the European Perinatal Health Report (2022).
