Canyon Partners Secures Over $400 Million for CLO Fund IV

Canyon Partners, a prominent alternative investment manager with a robust $29 billion portfolio, has reached a significant milestone by closing commitments exceeding $400 million for its latest CLO equity fund, known as CLO Fund IV. This funding not only surpassed the initial target of $300 million but also showcases overwhelming support from various global investors.

The resounding success of CLO Fund IV can be attributed to the firm’s proven track record with its previous funds, which laid the groundwork for strong investor relationships. The funds primarily focus on acquiring majority equity stakes in Canyon’s issued U.S. and European CLOs, along with the option to invest in mezzanine tranches within the CLO market.

Investor participation is notably diverse, encompassing pension funds, insurance companies, endowments, family offices, and registered investment advisors (RIAs). Remarkably, over 70% of those who invested in CLO Fund III have chosen to re-invest in Fund IV, underscoring their confidence in Canyon’s strategic direction.

Erik Miller, a partner at Canyon and co-head of the CLO division, expressed gratitude towards their investors, acknowledging that the closing of CLO Fund IV occurs during an exceptionally active period for CLO investments. Currently, CLO Fund IV is already 50% deployed. The firm successfully issued five CLOs in both the U.S. and European markets within the past year, a period characterized by challenges such as limited new loan supply and increased market volatility. Martin Downen, also a partner and co-head of Canyon's CLO business, highlighted how temporary market dislocations present opportunities for active management.
