Recognition of Excellence in SMEs: Tanaka Takashi Awarded

In a notable ceremony heralded during the Spring 2024 honors, Takashi Tanaka, the Chairman of Yasuhisa Co., has been honored with the prestigious Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette for his outstanding contributions to the promotion of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and the advancement of Japan's medical technologies.

Background of the Award

Yasuhisa Co., headquartered in Ota City, Tokyo, has been at the forefront of innovation for over half a century. This recognition owes itself to the company’s tireless commitment to functioning as a 'research and development-oriented small factory'. Tanaka’s leadership and the company’s efforts, particularly in the development of advanced medical devices such as artificial hearts, significantly bolstered Japan's industrial landscape and cutting-edge medical technologies.

The award specifically acknowledges Yasuhisa’s long-standing commitment to prototype and enhance medical devices through foundational research, recognizing the company as a critical supporter of Japan's advanced medical field.

Recognition of Four Essential Roles

Yasuhisa Co.’s journey goes beyond being just a corporate entity—it reflects a continuous support for the advancement of Japan’s medical innovations and the elevation of small-scale manufacturing. The honor bestowed upon Tanaka highlights three main contributions:
1. Contributions to Society: Sustaining advanced medical innovations over the years.
2. Regional Contributions: Expanding the manufacturing landscape and supporting the growth of local factories.
3. Establishing Co-Creation Business Models: Bridging academia and industry to redefine the role of small and medium-sized enterprises.

These roles encapsulate Yasuhisa’s unique position—not simply as a manufacturer but as a pivotal figure in research and development, establishing connections between academic institutions and the practical manufacturing sector.

Additionally, the establishment of a robust network comprising over 50 partner companies within Ota City enhances Yasuhisa’s outreach, allowing a steady influx of visitors and aspiring professionals from both domestic and international locations while sharing the joy and importance of manufacturing with younger generations.

A Message from Takashi Tanaka

Expressing his gratitude upon receiving this honor, Tanaka acknowledged that a medal seemed an unattainable accolade for a small factory owner like himself. He attributes this recognition to the collective efforts and support of everyone he has worked with throughout his career.

Founded in 1969 by his father, Tanaka Funou, Yasuhisa derives its name from Tanaka’s hometown of Miyazaki, and has played a pivotal role in the development of artificial hearts in collaboration with esteemed institutions like Waseda University and Tokyo Women’s Medical University since its inception. Tanaka joined Yasuhisa following his graduate studies and has expanded the network of collaborations, significantly contributing to medical innovations over the decades.

A pioneering spirit in the domain of medical collaborations, Tanaka has also spearheaded initiatives for developing assistive devices for visually impaired individuals. Under his aegis, Yasuhisa has evolved into a 'convenience store' for manufacturing, fulfilling various prototype requests across multiple sectors

Anticipating the future, as of May 2025, Tanaka’s son, Tanaka Hiroshi, has taken on the mantle of President. With the motto 'Venture Friendly', Yasuhisa aims to broaden its networks and operations further.

Navigating the Landscape of Japanese Manufacturing

Tanaka’s journey underscores a commitment to mentoring the next generation while remaining actively involved in design processes. He emphasizes the importance of nurturing relationships within the network of subcontractors, dedicating efforts to ensuring their operational well-being and adherence to principles established by his late father. His lifetime of dedication will leave a legacy that resonates within the professional community, firmly establishing Yasuhisa Co. as a pillar within Japan’s vibrant manufacturing ecosystem.

Foremost in his gratitude, Tanaka reflects on decades of collaboration starting from his days as a trainee at the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center to the present. With a heartfelt acknowledgment in multiple languages—which spans expressions from Korean grace to French thanks—he sincerely expresses gratitude to all those who have supported him.

Tanaka Takashi remains a pivotal figure championing innovation in the medical sector and continues to inspire the emerging generations to pursue careers in manufacturing, a discipline he passionately advocates as vital for societal advancement.
