CIL and AM Green Target the Largest Renewable Energy Contract in India
In a groundbreaking move for the renewable energy sector,
Coal India Limited (CIL) is poised to establish one of the world's largest renewable energy supply contracts with
AM Green. This ambitious initiative aims to supply a staggering
4500 MW of carbon-free energy, crucial for powering the future green ammonia facilities of AM Green.
CIL's integration of solar and wind energy underscores India's commitment to cleaner energy, aligning with the national goal of achieving net-zero emissions. A formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which was signed on
May 7, outlines a long-term agreement to ensure a steady supply of renewable energy.
The Energy Breakdown
The energy supply will comprise roughly
2500 to 3000 MW from solar sources and between
1500 to 2000 MW from wind. The total financial investment in this venture is estimated to be around
Rs. 25,000 Crores. Potential sites for wind projects are being explored in southern states, while solar facilities are projected to be located in regions like
Gujarat and
Rajasthan, known for their abundant sunlight.
AM Green plans to utilize these two renewable energy sources in conjunction with pumped hydro storage to guarantee consistent green energy supply to its facilities. CIL's Chairman,
P M Prasad, emphasized that while coal will remain a central energy source for India's immediate needs, the company is committed to fostering a sustainable and greener energy future, positioning itself as the country's integrated energy supplier.
AM Green's Future Goals
Founded by the pioneering team behind
Greenko, AM Green aims to produce
5 million tons per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia by
2030. This ambitious production target translates to approximately
1 MTPA of green hydrogen, covering a significant portion of India's national green hydrogen production goals.
Anil Chalamalasetty, founder of the Greenko Group and AM Green, expressed enthusiasm about this partnership with CIL, referring to it as an essential step in establishing one of the most significant carbon-free energy supply contracts globally. He further voiced his aspirations for AM Green to become a competitive leader in the production of green hydrogen, ammonia, and other sustainable molecules.
The Commitment to Change
The signing of the agreement featured key representatives, including
Sudarsan Bora, General Manager of CIL, and
Shatanshu Agrawal, Senior VP of Business Development at AM Green, alongside prominent individuals from CIL's management team. This collaboration illustrates a shared commitment to a greener energy landscape.
AM Green's initiatives are built upon the extensive expertise in renewable asset construction and management that the Greenko Group brings to the table. The organization is actively developing large-scale closed-loop pumped storage projects aimed at delivering
24/7 electricity at competitive prices. This strategic direction aligns with a mission to produce sustainable aviation fuel, green chemicals, and biofuels, emphasizing innovation and specialized partnerships.
Conclusion
AM Green is dedicated to advancing green ammonia production across multiple sites in India, aiming for milestones that significantly contribute to both global decarbonization efforts and India's net-zero emissions targets. By achieving
5 MTPA of green ammonia within the next decade, AM Green will play an integral role not only in fulfilling national objectives but also in catering to European import demands for green hydrogen, marking a critical shift in the energy landscape.
As the world pivots towards renewable energy, collaborations like CIL and AM Green will lead the way in transitioning to a sustainable, low-carbon future.
