ENGIE Partners with Kraken for Energy Storage in Italy
In a significant move for the energy sector, ENGIE, a global leader in energy solutions, has introduced the AI-integrated operating system, Kraken, into Italy’s battery storage management. This partnership marks a pivotal step in Italy's energy transition, particularly at two locations: Sicily and Terni, where they will manage a combined capacity of 37.5 megawatts (MW).
Innovative Technology for Energy Management
Kraken’s advanced power control capabilities are set to support ENGIE’s trading teams by automating real-time control and dispatch of battery assets. The introduction of this technology will not only enhance the efficiency of renewable energy usage but also alleviate the risks of power outages and system overloads. By enabling real-time monitoring and alerts, Kraken utilizes AI for sophisticated analysis and optimization, maximizing the system’s performance and value.
The partnership aims to address the challenges posed by renewable energy integration in Italy’s energy landscape. As the country strives to meet its ambitious renewable energy goals, Kraken's implementation is timely and strategic, allowing for greater flexibility and optimization of the energy system.
Addressing Renewable Energy Challenges
According to Terna, Italy’s transmission system operator, to meet the national energy and climate plan’s targets of 131 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind energy by 2030, there is a pressing need for 71.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of new large-scale energy storage, with much of it likely based in southern regions. The demand for flexible energy solutions will become increasingly critical as Italy enhances its power supply balance and tackles congestion within the transmission grid.
Battery storage emerges as a vital component to maintain stable electricity supplies and further enable the integration of renewable sources like solar and wind. This transition to energy storage is not only essential for achieving quicker and more cost-efficient energy solutions but will also form the foundation for a reliable energy shift.
