In an exciting collaboration, CIBONE is set to host a two-part pop-up event featuring the renowned eyewear brand Kearny, from April 25 to May 10 in Omotesando, followed by a showcase in Ginza from May 16 to May 31. Founded in 2013 by designer Fujiki Kumagai, Kearny derives its name from the iconic Kearny Street in San Francisco, where Kumagai once thrived as a vintage buyer. The name also symbolizes the intersection of history and culture, reflecting the brand's commitment to craftsmanship and tradition.
Kearny has been consistently producing high-quality eyewear using celluloid since its inception. This material, once prevalent, is now rare due to its labor-intensive handling and declining use among craftsmen. Nevertheless, it offers remarkable durability and elasticity, ensuring that the frames are not only comfortable but also resilient against wear and tear. Each pair is meticulously crafted to provide a luxurious feel against the skin, allowing wearers to enjoy them for extended periods without discomfort, ultimately developing a deep affection for the product over time.
In 2023, Kearny expanded its portfolio by launching the "acekearny" line, incorporating new materials such as titanium and acetate alongside its traditional celluloid eyewear. This diversification aims to broaden the brand’s offerings while maintaining the high-quality standard it’s known for.
The pop-up will feature the "konide" collection, which includes eight series of eyewear showcased at both CIBONE in Omotesando and CIBONE CASE in Ginza. Among the items displayed, you will find pieces created from celluloid (konide1 to konide3) and those using alternate materials like acetate and titanium (konide4 to konide8). In addition to new releases, archival pieces will also be available, providing a comprehensive look at Kearny’s evolution. Notably, CIBONE CASE will host an order exhibition for the FW 2026 new collection, emphasizing its exclusive nature as it will only be available at this location.
The "konide" collection draws inspiration from conical stratovolcanoes, like the famous Mount Fuji and Akagi Mountain, reflecting their long-formed, natural beauty. The new Spring/Summer 2026 collection primarily utilizes materials such as acetate and titanium. The frame designs embody the serene silhouettes of Akagi Mountain, translating their organic beauty into elegant lens shapes. The unique mountain silhouette is reflected in the temples of the eyewear. Master craftsman Masahiko Niwa, known for his traditional skills from the eyewear-producing city of Sabae, will oversee the production, ensuring that the collaboration between Kumagai's innovative designs and Niwa's expert craftsmanship shines through in these exceptional eyewear pieces.
Mark your calendars for April 25 and 26, when Kearny staff, along with designer Kumagai, will be present at CIBONE, offering a rare opportunity to connect directly with the brand during its launch. This pop-up event is not just about new releases; it’s a chance to explore past archive models and immerse yourself in Kearny's captivating universe.
