This renovation, which involved the installation of lightweight membrane ceilings, was completed in time for the facility's reopening on May 1.

The Ikikiland Katano, which opened in 1997 as a general sports facility in Katano City, underwent this significant renovation to extend its lifespan, specifically targeting the ceiling of the main arena. The previous ceiling structure was classified as a “designated ceiling” under current regulations, making it the focus of the refurbishment.

Effectiveness of Membrane Ceilings in Earthquake Mitigation

The Great East Japan Earthquake resulted in numerous reports of ceiling collapses in large spaces such as gyms, theaters, commercial facilities, and factories, highlighting the urgent need for the seismic retrofitting of non-structural components like ceilings. Following this disaster, legislative updates in August 2013 specified that ceilings with a weight exceeding 2 kg/m² could pose significant risks during earthquakes, thus classifying them as “designated ceilings.”

In contrast, membrane materials weigh only about 600 g/m², significantly lighter than traditional ceiling materials and exempt from the designated ceiling classification under certain conditions. This allows for installation without needing individual verification processes. The flexibility of membrane materials not only elevates indoor design but also allows them to respond to significant seismic movements, lessening the risk of ceiling detachments.

Despite being only 1 mm thick, these materials can withstand falling debris. This combination of advantages has led to the adoption of membrane ceilings in schools, gymnasiums, and indoor pools during renovations and new constructions.
