Experience the Joy of New Tea Picking at Kakegawa's World Agricultural Heritage

Discovering New Tea: A Hands-On Experience in Kakegawa

On April 29, 2026, from 10 AM to 12:30 PM, the Pal System Shizuoka cooperative will host a unique event at Yamaei Co., Ltd. in Kakegawa City. This event offers participants the chance to immerse themselves in the traditional processes of new tea picking and tea manufacturing, celebrating Shizuoka's esteemed tea culture and commitment to environmental conservation.

The Event and Its Significance

Approximately 20 members of Pal System Shizuoka will take part in a hands-on experience centered around the art of tea. Participants will tour the Yamaei factory, which is gearing up to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027. Guided by experts, they will learn how to brew deep-steamed tea, maximizing its rich and complex flavors. This event not only promotes tea appreciation but also strengthens the bond between producers and consumers, reinforcing the concept of local consumption and environmental stewardship.

The Traditional Method: "Shizuoka's Tea Grass Field Farming"

Participants will have the opportunity to pick new tea under the guidance of experienced farmers. The tea is cultivated using the traditional method known as "Shizuoka's Tea Grass Field Farming" (茶草場農法). This method involves spreading cut grass between the rows of tea plants, which suppresses weed growth and aids microbial decomposition, enriching the soil. This technique, recognized as a World Agricultural Heritage by the FAO in 2013, enhances the aroma and taste of the tea leaves while maintaining local biodiversity.

The Path from Harvest to Brewing

Once picked, the tea leaves are processed at Yamaei's own factory, certified with the "Mini-HACCP" food safety management system in Shizuoka. The deep-steamed tea, famed for its depth of flavor and nutritional content, encapsulates Shizuoka's rich agricultural tradition.

The exquisite Kakegawa deep-steamed tea, along with other varieties, will be available exclusively through Pal System Shizuoka's promotional materials, such as the "Shizu Marche" flyer.
