Huawei Wins GSMA Global Mobile LATAM Award for Tech4Nature Project Protecting Jaguars

Huawei Emerges Victorious at GSMA Global Mobile LATAM Award

On May 16, 2026, Huawei was honored with the prestigious Global Mobile (GLOMO) LATAM Award for its outstanding social impact through the Tech4Nature project in Latin America, specifically focusing on the Dzilam de Bravo nature reserve in Yucatan, Mexico. Presented at the M360 LATAM 2026 event, the GLOMO award celebrates the project’s significant contributions to environmental conservation and the utilization of technology to protect the region's iconic and endangered jaguar population.

A Partnership for Conservation

Tech4Nature represents a global collaboration between Huawei and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), along with several strategic partners, including the Yucatán government, C Minds, the Polytechnic University of Yucatán (UPY), and the local community of Dzilam de Bravo. The initiative employs advanced technological tools to monitor and preserve the natural habitat of jaguars, a key species in the Yucatan ecosystem.

Samira Herrera, Huawei Mexico’s communications and public relations officer, stated, "This recognition reflects the power of technology when harnessed for the benefit of both people and the planet. Tech4Nature Mexico exemplifies how cross-sector collaboration can lead to tangible positive impacts on communities and biodiversity conservation."

The project, launched in 2022 and now in its second phase, focuses on using artificial intelligence (AI) to track species detection and individual identification alongside community-driven monitoring and governance. This collaboration bridges the efforts between government, academia, civil society, and the private sector to generate collective action for nature's protection.

Regina Cervera, Project Coordinator for Tech4Nature Mexico at AI for Climate via C Minds, emphasized, "Tech4Nature Mexico illustrates that the true potential of technology lies in transforming data into coordinated action, enabling public policies that safeguard nature. This initiative, fundamentally centered on community and human rights, utilizes tools like AI to support the ecosystems that sustain our economies and future."

Achievements in Species Monitoring

Since its inception, the project has identified over 147 species, including 40 that are endangered, through the deployment of 26 camera traps and 60 acoustic devices within the reserve area. Remarkably, the system has also identified 16 individual jaguars, providing crucial data to understand each animal's behavior, movement patterns, and necessary conservation measures—elements that are vital for maintaining the environmental balance of the reserve.

Huawei’s cloud solutions are instrumental in processing and analyzing data collected in the field. The monitoring system has not only captured video footage of jaguars but has also automatically processed more than 100,000 images and 600,000 audio recordings, significantly enhancing wildlife monitoring and understanding of local ecosystems. The insights gained from this extensive data collection facilitate better ecosystem management and decision-making, further influencing public policies.

Additionally, the protected area itself has expanded from 69,000 hectares to 104,000 hectares as part of the evolving conservation efforts.

The Role of Technology in Conservation

Technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud storage, and data analytics enable the Tech4Nature Mexico initiative to establish a sustainable scientific conservation model that uniquely combines scientific innovation with community participation. Alongside these technological solutions, Huawei’s wireless connectivity products play a critical role in the environmental data transmission for Tech4Nature projects—a recurring theme discussed at the M360 LATAM 2026 event, host to regional and global leaders from the technology ecosystem, mobile networks, governments, and related sectors.

The GLOMO LATAM Awards acknowledge innovators who are redefining technology, connectivity, and social progress across the region. The award presented to the Tech4Nature Mexico project highlights its innovative solutions and ability to generate significant social and environmental benefits for Latin America.

Through Tech4Nature Mexico, Huawei reaffirms its commitment to employing technology as a means of building a more sustainable and inclusive future, promoting projects that foster environmental protection and community development.

Conclusion

Since its launch in 2020, the Tech4Nature initiative has supported 13 projects across 11 countries, tailored to address conservation challenges. In alignment with Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative and IUCN’s Green List, this partnership seeks to extend technological innovations for nature conservation goals.
