Coastal Medical Transportation Systems Enhances Safety at the Boston Marathon
Coastal Medical Transportation Systems (CMTS) is gearing up to take a leading role in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for the prestigious 129th Boston Marathon, which is presented by Bank of America. As the largest EMS provider for this historic event, CMTS underscores its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of runners, spectators, and the broader Boston community. The marathon is set to be held in April 2025, and preparation is already in full swing.
Working closely with key partners such as the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.), the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) Ambulance Strike Team, and various local public safety agencies, CMTS plans to deploy over 100 trained EMS professionals along the marathon route, which spans 26.2 miles. Their comprehensive operational efforts will extend critical medical support primarily through the communities of Brookline, Newton, and Wellesley, all pivotal locations for race-day activities.
"Our team has been meticulously planning for several months to ensure a seamless response to any emergencies that may occur during this highly anticipated event," stated Alex Theoharidis, the Founder and CEO of Coastal Medical Transportation Systems. "We are honored to contribute to one of the world’s most iconic athletic events and take our responsibility for public safety very seriously. Our expertise in managing large-scale EMS operations equips us to effectively address any medical emergencies that arise along the course."
On race day, the EMS operation will feature an impressive fleet, including 45 ambulances, four bike teams, four Gators, two mobile medical units, and six tactical EMS responders. Additionally, specialized communications staff and command personnel will be expertly positioned throughout the route. Beyond their primary partnerships with 9-1-1 services in Brookline, Newton, and Wellesley, CMTS will also lend vital EMS support to B.A.A. medical tents located in Natick, Wellesley, and Newton.
Stephanie Walsh, the Medical Coordinator for the Boston Marathon, highlighted the extensive planning involved: "As we approach Patriots' Day, we are committed to ensuring that athletes and attendees have a safe, memorable, and enjoyable experience. From the start of the race to its conclusion, participants can expect robust medical support and encouragement as they strive to earn that coveted unicorn medal."
The Boston Marathon is recognized globally as the oldest annual marathon and ranks as one of the premier road racing events worldwide. With over 30,000 runners and more than 500,000 spectators projected to attend, it is the most-watched sporting event in New England, demanding a highly coordinated emergency response plan to guarantee the safety of everyone involved.
