UMC and AP Memory Team Up to Revolutionize Power Solutions for AI and HPC Systems

Revolutionizing Power Delivery Solutions for AI and HPC Systems

In an exciting development for the technology industry, United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) and AP Memory have joined forces to create advanced power delivery solutions tailored for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) systems. This strategic collaboration combines UMC's cutting-edge deep trench capacitor (DTC) technology with AP Memory's innovative silicon capacitor designs, aimed at solving the pressing power efficiency challenges faced by modern data centers.

As AI workloads continue to expand at a rapid pace, the demand for efficient power delivery systems within computing architectures is intensifying. Traditional configurations that relied on circuit board-level stabilization components are evolving. Instead, there's a significant shift toward embedding capacitors directly into the interposer or substrate of advanced packaging solutions. This innovative approach not only shortens the path for power delivery but also enhances power integrity and facilitates more efficient voltage regulation, which is critical for the rigorous demands of AI and HPC systems.

Key Developments in the Collaboration

The partnership hit a major milestone in the third quarter of 2026 when AP Memory successfully completed the tape-out and initial functional validation for their S-SiCap™ Gen2D discrete silicon capacitor designs. The next stage involves comprehensive system-level performance and reliability tests of these capacitors integrated into substrate packages, thereby supporting various capacitance and operating voltage requirements.

In addition, UMC and AP Memory are exploring opportunities to broaden their collaboration to include capacitor-embedded interposers and landside capacitors to accommodate diverse system designs. This initiative aims to create a holistic approach to power delivery solutions that meet the unique needs of clients across different sectors.

GC Hung, Senior Vice President of UMC, highlighted the fundamental shift in power delivery dynamics as AI and HPC continue to evolve.
