Waseda Rugby Club's Sustainability Initiative: From Jerseys to Eco-Friendly Bags

Waseda Rugby Club’s Journey Towards Sustainability

Waseda University's rugby club, established over a century ago, has embarked on an innovative sustainability initiative that transforms its iconic "red-black jerseys" into paper bags. This project aims to raise awareness about a circular economy and carbon neutrality by repurposing these jerseys, which are symbolic of Waseda Rugby.

The Significance of the Red-Black Jersey

Often referred to as the "red-black jersey," this uniform is a hallmark of the Waseda Rugby Club, embodying its values of tension, creativity, and heritage. The players donning this jersey have left a lasting impression, competing fiercely for over 107 years.

Traditional Challenges in Jersey Management

Typically, these jerseys were only worn during official matches or regular games, leading to wear and tear over time. Once they had reached the end of their usability, many were stored away or, unfortunately, disposed of through incineration if reuse was not feasible. This cycle raised several environmental concerns.

Addressing Climate Challenges through Innovation

Despite being known as a winter sport, rugby activities occur year-round, exposing the club to the harsh realities of climate change. Rising temperatures have forced the club to reduce training time and adjust match schedules, highlighting the urgent need for action against climate-related issues. To tackle these challenges, the rugby club has initiated a project to recycle jerseys meant for disposal into shopper bags, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions and minimizing environmental impact.

Initially, there were concerns about repurposing the traditional jerseys, questioning the significance of a sports club engaging in such social initiatives. However, the club believes that the history and pride associated with these jerseys can be preserved, allowing the players' aspirations to be manifested in a meaningful way while also supporting current team members.

Expanding Support through Eco-Friendly Bags

The newly produced paper bags will be provided to customers who purchase Waseda rugby merchandise. Additionally, the club plans to feature logos from supporting companies on these bags, further broadening the circle of support for the rugby team. For fans, using these ethically-produced bags can serve as a means of reflecting on carbon neutrality and participating in a greater movement towards sustainability.

This initiative is not only about reducing environmental burdens but also about striving for a sustainable future alongside fans, corporate partners, and the broader community.

Waseda University's Carbon Neutrality Commitment

In alignment with its commitment to carbon neutrality, Waseda University declared its ambition in November 2021 to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the 2030s. This initiative, dubbed the “Waseda Carbon Net Zero Challenge 2030s,” focuses on three pillars: cutting-edge research for CO₂ reduction, promoting a carbon-neutral mindset through education, and achieving emissions neutrality across campus by 2032, during the university's 150th anniversary. This project serves as a new approach to environmental challenges through sports, positioning the rugby club's innovative initiative as part of a larger university-wide commitment to sustainability.

Quotes from Leadership

Director of the Waseda Rugby Club, Naoto Onzo, said: "The Waseda Rugby Club has, over its 107-year history, embodied the dreams and ambitions of numerous players clad in the red-black jersey. This project, transforming our jerseys into shopper bags, symbolizes not just resource reuse but also a new challenge in addressing societal issues, particularly concerning climate change. We trust in the power of sports to create meaningful change."

By expanding their influence and engaging both fans and corporations, they aim not only to preserve tradition but also contribute towards a sustainable society that delivers dreams and excitement through Waseda Rugby.
