Collins Aerospace Secures Major FAA Contract for Advanced Radar Systems in US Airspace
Collins Aerospace Secures Contract for Modernizing Airspace
Collins Aerospace, a division of RTX, has recently secured a contract valued at $438 million from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This partnership marks a substantial step towards modernizing the U.S. National Airspace System, an initiative that aims to enhance safety, simplify air traffic management, and increase operational efficiency for all users.
The Radar System Replacement program, part of the DOT's ambitious project to overhaul air traffic control, will see Collins Aerospace deploy state-of-the-art radar technologies. This program is a foundational aspect of the government’s move towards a more advanced and integrated air traffic management system.
Speaking on the award, Nate Boelkins, president of Avionics at Collins Aerospace, stated, "As a trusted supplier to the FAA for more than 70 years, Collins is prepared to rapidly deploy next-generation radar systems that replace outdated technology with a single, modern and interoperable solution." This indicates the organization's commitment to providing innovative solutions that integrate seamlessly into the existing infrastructure while ensuring enhanced safety and efficiency for air traffic controllers and other stakeholders.
The contract will facilitate the introduction of the Condor Mk3 and ASR-XM radar systems. The Condor Mk3 is a cooperative surveillance radar that communicates with aircraft transponders, while the ASR-XM operates as a non-cooperative radar that tracks aircraft using reflected signals. These advanced systems have already been certified to meet the FAA's rigorous surveillance requirements through prior test site evaluations, guaranteeing their reliability and effectiveness in real-world scenarios.
More than 550 RTX radar systems are currently operational within the national airspace, establishing a robust foundation for this significant modernization effort. The advanced capabilities of the Condor Mk3 and ASR-XM enhance precise tracking of aircraft, especially at lower altitudes, making air travel safer and more efficient.
