The 10th Huawei ICT Competition Concludes with 220,000 Participants from 49 Countries

The Huawei ICT Competition has marked a significant milestone with its 10th edition, culminating in a Global Final award ceremony held today in Shenzhen, China. This year’s event witnessed unprecedented participation, with an astounding 220,000 university students and faculty members from over 2,000 institutions across more than 100 countries and regions. After rigorous national and regional selection rounds, 177 teams representing 49 nations made it to the finale to showcase their talents and compete for various awards.

During the closing ceremony, Ritchie (Honghua) Peng, President of Huawei’s Strategy and Business Development Department, highlighted the competition's alignment with the company's long-standing commitment to leveraging technology for societal good, promoting sustainable development goals. He stated that this competition serves as a tool for learning through competition, showcasing the participants' dedication, curiosity, and deep interest in technical fields. Furthermore, he announced the launch of a new Ascend AI Operator Development Program in mainland China, aimed at helping young programmers engage more directly with cutting-edge industry technologies through task-oriented challenges.

Dr. Shafika Isaacs, acting director of UNESCO’s Institute for Information Technologies in Education and Head of the Technology and AI in Education Department, praised the partnership between UNESCO and Huawei while congratulating the participants on their performances. She emphasized that the future of artificial intelligence relies on collaboration among governments, international organizations, academia, and the business community. The initiatives developed in cooperation between UNESCO and Huawei, such as capacity-building programs in Arab countries and ICT training partnerships in Central Asia and the Caucasus, aim to strengthen higher education and vocational training systems, ultimately preparing talent for the future.

The participants displayed impressive capabilities by using new technologies to tackle real-world challenges, exemplifying not only their creativity but also demonstrating a responsible approach to technology that embodies the purpose of education.

This year, the Huawei ICT Competition recognized exceptional teams from eight countries in various categories, awarding them with honors in Application, Innovation, and Programming competitions. Notable winners include:
  • - Application Competition - Network Category: Teams from Algeria, Brazil, Nigeria, and Shenzhen Polytechnic University.
  • - Application Competition - Cloud Category: Teams from Egypt, Algeria, and Kenya.
  • - Application Competition - Computer Science Category: Teams from Egypt, the Dominican Republic, and Algeria.
  • - Ascend AI Category: Shenzhen Polytechnic University.
  • - Innovation Competition: Teams from Wuhan University of Technology, Ahmadu Bello University, Singapore National University, and Fujian Normal University.
  • - Programming Competition: Wuhan Software and Engineering Vocational College.

In addition to the main awards, special accolades were presented. The Women in Technology Award was given to seven female teams from Azerbaijan, Nigeria, Kenya, China, and Bahrain, while the Green Development Award was claimed by teams from Ghana and China. Ten students from China received the opportunity to participate in Huawei's Future Business Leaders Program. The Most Valuable Educator Award honored 16 outstanding educators from nine countries and regions, including Pakistan, China, Nigeria, Egypt, the UAE, Brazil, Thailand, and Turkey.

Six teams from Egypt, Brazil, Malaysia, Poland, and Pakistan won the ICT Competition Online Popularity Award.

During the Global Final, Huawei hosted a summit on Accelerating Transformation in Education with AI, during which they introduced the ICT Academy's AI Course Solution and released a development analysis report containing recommendations for enhancing ICT skills in nine countries across Central Asia and the Caucasus. As the demand for skills in artificial intelligence, computing, big data, and cybersecurity continues to rise, the Huawei ICT Competition offers students an international platform to develop practical skills through industry-academy collaboration and shared educational resources. This experience enables them to solve real-life problems and prepares them for the digital economy.
