Huawei Digital Power Empowers ASEAN for a Zero-Carbon Future
Huawei Digital Power recently participated in the ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF-25) from October 15 to 17, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The theme of the forum was "Powering ASEAN: Bridging Borders and Building Prosperity." This event gathered over 1,500 representatives, including energy ministers, policymakers, and industry leaders from ten ASEAN countries, focusing on regional energy cooperation, transformation toward clean energy, investments, and financing.
During the forum, Xia Hesheng, Vice President of Huawei Digital Power, delivered a keynote speech emphasizing the crucial role of grid-forming technologies in achieving energy transition and carbon neutrality in the ASEAN region. He highlighted that interconnecting energy systems and cross-border energy transmission from renewable sources are essential steps forward. Particularly in high renewable energy integration grids, ensuring stable electricity transmission and consumption is critical. Huawei Digital Power has been a leader in the PV+ESS industry for over a decade, transitioning from simply following grid developments to actively shaping them with all-scenario grid-forming capabilities.
Huawei's commitment to quality and safety in the energy sector is underscored by its involvement in several groundbreaking projects. One notable achievement is the energy system supporting the ambitious regeneration tourism project at The Red Sea in Saudi Arabia, which operates entirely on green energy. Moreover, Huawei's energy storage solution in Cambodia, featuring a capacity of 1 GWh, earned TÜV SÜD certification, reflecting the company’s dedication to engineering excellence. Looking ahead, Huawei Digital Power is set to deepen collaboration with clients and partners across ASEAN nations, aiming to set high standards for energy transformation using advanced grid-forming technologies.
In a roundtable discussion focused on enhancing resilience in energy networks across ASEAN countries, Chen Xieming, a Huawei Digital Power expert, called for uniform regional networking standards to lay a solid foundation for network security and bolster connectivity among ASEAN nations. This technological framework is particularly vital as energy systems increasingly incorporate renewable energy sources, necessitating robust standards for grid formation to ensure the region’s networks can withstand challenges.
Chong Chern Peng, Vice President of Huawei Digital Power Malaysia Business, underscored Malaysia's strategic position within the ASEAN energy network. Malaysia’s pivotal role involves facilitating energy cooperation with neighboring countries such as Thailand and Singapore through cross-border energy transactions. To realize the ASEAN energy network's vision, it is imperative for all member countries to have resilient and dynamic energy systems, whereby grid-forming technologies are indispensable.
During the ministerial dialogue, Xia reiterated that success in fostering prosperous energy economies in the ASEAN region hinges on building stable and high-quality energy infrastructure, along with executing pertinent policy guidelines and standards. By deploying all-scenario grid-forming solutions, Huawei Digital Power strives to enhance the levels of short circuit, persistence, and recovery capabilities of energy systems. For instance, the project in Saudi Arabia allows thousands of energy conversion systems to operate offline, enabling fast recovery post-grid failures within minutes.
Huawei has implemented an ESS security framework encompassing everything from components to networks, ensuring the highest standards of quality are met through intelligent architecture and stringent quality control measures. The company’s commitment to quality throughout its lifecycle—from research and development to after-sales services—ensures the long-term reliable operation of its systems. For example, the Golmud project in Qinghai Province has maintained a fault rate of less than 0.5% over 13 years of stable operation.
As Huawei Digital Power aims to promote the global standard for energy transformation in ASEAN countries, it remains dedicated to providing comprehensive, high-quality products and technologies. The green future of the ASEAN region is built on stable and efficient energy. At AEBF-25, Huawei Digital Power not only showcased its top-tier grid-forming technologies and systemic strengths but also reaffirmed its commitment to a green, smart, and sustainable future. Moving forward, Huawei Digital Power plans to double its investments in research and development, furthering collaboration with local partners to jointly support the region's energy mix transformation. The company firmly believes that technology is crucial for achieving a world with zero carbon emissions, making it a reliable partner in this global mission.
