Huawei Unveils Vision for AI-Centric All-Optical Network at MWC 2026

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2026, Huawei took a significant step forward in telecommunications by unveiling a vision for a fully optical network centered around artificial intelligence (AI). Hosted by IDATE, the Green All-Optical Network Forum where the announcement took place gathered over 200 industry leaders, experts, and regulators from European telecommunications to discuss the potential and challenges of fully optical networks in the age of AI.

Kim Jin, Vice President of Huawei's Optical Business Product Line, elaborated on four key initiatives aimed at improving network capabilities in terms of bandwidth, reliability, coverage, and latency. These developments aim to help operators unlock the full value of their networks while delivering an outstanding service experience powered by AI technology.

The emerging AI technologies necessitate a more robust infrastructure, and Huawei's proposals include advancements in various areas.

Enhanced Network Coverage



Huawei plans to extend Wi-Fi coverage in homes with its innovative FTTR (Fiber to the Room) solution. By utilizing Wi-Fi 7 technology, Huawei’s offering can deliver stable speeds of up to 4 Gb/s in every room, ensuring seamless roaming throughout the house with a latency of only 10 ms. The combination of advanced mesh architecture and AI technology to combat interference can boost speeds by up to 20%, even in challenging conditions.

Next-Gen Passive Optical Networks (PON)



New innovations in the Passive Optical Network segment involve application-level segmentation and Wi-Fi wireless interface scheduling, enabling the creation of dedicated security channels for VIP applications. This results in multi-tiered, deterministic network experiences that maintain lower latency and higher bandwidth.

Advanced Metro Networks



Huawei has also introduced a novel OXC (Optical Cross-Connect) solution that enhances AI service experiences by expanding fully optical switching into metropolitan networks. This approach reduces latency between endpoints and establishes a mesh network architecture that facilitates millisecond-level computations vital for AI applications.

High-Bandwidth Achievements



In line with the increasing demand for bandwidth, Huawei aims to tackle bandwidth bottlenecks through its 3D-mesh backbone architecture and the introduction of 400 G/800 G technology. This innovation, along with new Super C+L bands and full-format underwater cable transmission, effectively addresses bandwidth shortages in heavy traffic areas while also managing data center interconnections and cross-border traffic efficiently.

Zero-Downtime Optical Network



To ensure continuous operations for AI services, Huawei's strategy incorporates coordinated updates of hardware and software, leveraging algorithms and eOTDR technology to accurately identify and alleviate network risks. The use of innovative liquid crystal materials allows for wavelength switching (WSON) in as little as 50 ms, providing extremely high reliability for continuous service availability.

Smart Network Maintenance



Huawei is also focusing on intelligent operational models in optical access domains to minimize complaints from residential broadband users. By employing agents such as FANSpirit and OTNSpirit, the operator can receive differentiated recommendations based on bandwidth, latency, and reliability, thus enabling smart updates and maintenance operations.

Huawei is committed to collaborating with industry partners to build a fully optical AI-centric target network.
