Honoring Our Veterinary Heroes
As pet owners, we often find ourselves facing some of life’s most challenging moments when our beloved animals take ill. In these trying times, it is our veterinarians who become our trusted allies, offering care and support to both pets and their families. Yet, the significant contributions of these devoted professionals often go unacknowledged. To bridge this gap in appreciation, Purina Pro Plan Veterinary is launching an inspiring initiative called the Pro Plan Veterinary Support Mission, coinciding with World Veterinary Day on April 25, 2026.
Show Your Thanks
The Pro Plan Veterinary Support Mission encourages pet lovers nationwide to express their heartfelt gratitude towards veterinarians by submitting messages of appreciation at
Thanks.ProPlanVet.com. From simple notes of thanks to creative drawings of cherished pets, every submission serves to remind veterinary professionals of the profound impact they have in our lives. The initiative will run until May 31, 2026, allowing ample time for participants to join in this collective show of support.
A Call to Action
A recent survey revealed a stark contrast between how pet owners perceive veterinary work and how veterinarians view their own recognition. While 94% of pet owners admire the dedication of veterinarians, only 49% of veterinary professionals feel valued for their efforts. This initiative aims to change that narrative, allowing pet owners to voice their appreciation and contribute to raising awareness of the challenges faced by veterinarians.
From April 15 to May 31, for every thank-you note submitted, Pro Plan Veterinary will donate $1—up to $50,000—to its non-profit partners who strive to enhance the veterinary profession's well-being. These contributions will focus on easing the persistent obstacles that veterinarians encounter and fostering a supportive environment for mental health, education, and development.
Addressing Professional Challenges
The veterinary profession is deeply rewarding, yet it is not without its unique challenges. Research indicates that a staggering 74% of veterinarians experience medium to high levels of burnout, compared to 32% in the general U.S. workforce. This troubling statistic underscores the pressing need for initiatives like the Pro Plan Veterinary Support Mission, which has already channeled over $3.5 million in funding towards organizations addressing these significant challenges. Programs focusing on both mental health and financial assistance for clients facing economic hardships are essential for maintaining a sustainable veterinary practice.
The Pro Plan Veterinary Support Mission reinforces the commitment to supporting veterinarians financially and emotionally, ensuring they feel appreciated and empowered to continue their essential work.
Recognizing Year-Round Efforts
While World Veterinary Day celebrates the profession, Pro Plan Veterinary encourages continued appreciation for veterinarians throughout the whole year. Dr. Callie Harris, a veterinarian with Pro Plan Veterinary, expressed the emotional toll that the profession carries and emphasized the importance of support: "As vets, we witness the emotional rollercoaster of pet ownership alongside clients, and it deeply affects us too. This is why our mission exists—to help alleviate the burdens we face."
Join the Movement
Pet owners are encouraged to participate and offer their thanks starting April 15, 2026. Not only will they uplift their local veterinary community, but they will also have the chance to nominate their favorite veterinary clinics for a potential donation of $10,000. This dual opportunity of recognition and support will further empower veterinarians on the front lines.
