LIFULL HOME'S FRIENDLY DOOR Reaches 7,000 Participating Real Estate Agencies

Transforming Housing Access: The Impact of LIFULL HOME'S FRIENDLY DOOR

In recent years, the issue of housing access has increasingly come to the forefront of social challenges in Japan. With the launch of LIFULL HOME'S FRIENDLY DOOR in 2019, a service designed to support individuals facing difficulties in finding housing, the real estate landscape began to shift. Today, the initiative proudly announces that it has surpassed 7,000 participating real estate agencies across the nation, a significant achievement as of June 1, 2026.

Addressing Housing Inequality

The FRIENDLY DOOR initiative is primarily aimed at "housing-challenged" individuals, including the elderly, foreign residents, LGBTQ communities, single parents, disaster survivors, people with disabilities, and young freelancers without family support. These groups often face obstacles such as discriminatory entry examinations and communication hurdles during their housing search. The mission of FRIENDLY DOOR is to create a welcoming space where these individuals can seek help without fear of rejection or prejudice.

In line with its corporate message, “Fulling Every LIFE,” LIFULL aims to promote housing equality, guiding users towards agencies that understand their unique situations and can provide them with the support they need.

The Evolution of FRIENDLY DOOR

When FRIENDLY DOOR was first introduced, it started modestly, with only around 500 participating agencies. However, the demand for inclusive housing solutions has dramatically increased, stemming from societal changes such as rising living costs and the swelling number of single-person households. This growing demand has pushed many real estate agencies to recognize the need for inclusive practices, resulting in the expansion of the FRIENDLY DOOR service offering.

Today, the platform provides various functionalities tailored to improve the housing search experience for its target demographic. Notably, the service allows users to:
  • - Find supportive real estate agencies: Users can search for accommodating real estate agencies across nine categories that cater to their specific needs and backgrounds.
  • - Explore non-discriminatory housing options: Users can directly search for properties that do not discriminate based on their circumstances.
  • - Access specialized consultations: FRIENDLY DOOR offers expert guidance through a support desk that is reachable via platforms like LINE, providing tailored advice on housing searches.
  • - Find multilingual support: Aiming to assist non-native Japanese speakers, the service enables users to find real estate agencies that can communicate in five major languages: English, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Portuguese.

Supporting Inclusivity in the Real Estate Market

As the FRIENDLY DOOR platform grows, so do its initiatives to support both housing seekers and real estate agencies. Recognizing the rise in vacancies due to Japan's declining population, LIFULL promotes the acceptance of housing-challenged individuals as a viable and humane strategy for business growth in real estate. This transformation indicates a shift from viewing inclusivity as mere charity to embracing it as a sound business strategy benefitting all parties involved.

Moreover, collaborative efforts with organizations like the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) have paved the way for innovative solutions such as the development of a platform to locate "safety net housing"—houses guaranteed not to reject tenants due to economic hardship or other vulnerabilities. By understanding the challenges faced by potential tenants and providing comprehensive support, FRIENDLY DOOR not only champions housing rights but also reshapes the perceptions surrounding housing for marginalized groups.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future

As FRIENDLY DOOR continues to evolve, it remains focused on its core mission. Future initiatives will likely include enhancing its technical offerings, expanding its network of participating agencies, and further engaging with the community around the importance of property inclusivity.

With ongoing efforts, the initiative aims to ensure that everyone in Japan, regardless of their background, can find and secure appropriate housing. The ultimate goal is for a time when FRIENDLY DOOR will no longer be necessary, as all housing seekers have equal access to safe and comfortable homes.

In the words of LIFULL's FRIENDLY DOOR project leader, "We are committed to creating a future where everyone can find a home, and we are grateful to all real estate agencies and partners who support this vision."

FRIENDLY DOOR represents a crucial step towards dismantling the barriers in the housing market, fostering an inclusive society where everyone can thrive.
