Introduction

On July 17, 2026, Okayama University conducted its first Advanced Curriculum Workshop titled "Medical Engineering Studies" at the Shikata Campus. This significant event attracted a mix of on-site and online participants and aimed to enhance the specialized skills and knowledge of technical staff within the medical and engineering fields.

Workshop Overview

The workshop focused on the collaboration between Okayama University and several national organizations to promote advanced training for technical staff. Masahiro Narasaki, a course leader from the university's General Technology Department, presided over the event, where three second-year TM program students, including external participants, presented their research findings.

The session began with remarks from Norihito Sato, the Deputy Director of the General Technology Department, emphasizing the program’s mission. He stated, "The TC College Medical Engineering Course is designed not just for our university, but in collaboration with related institutions nationwide, to elevate the technical skills, research capabilities, and educational quality of our technical staff. The outcomes will contribute to the overall development of our organization."

Sato also mentioned that the university has pioneered the introduction of an honorary title, "Honorary Technical Supervisor," awarded to technical staff with outstanding achievements, making it the first of its kind in Japan. He encouraged participants to enhance their expertise through this program and to continue supporting research and education as technical personnel.

Presentations

First Presentation

Miki Inoue, a technical staff member specialized in forensic medicine from the General Technology Department, delivered a presentation on "The Role of Forensic Science, Specifically DNA Testing." She provided real-world examples of DNA analysis methods and shared insights into ongoing research aimed at improving alternative tissue methods.

Second Presentation

The second presenter, Yoshihiko Hagiwara from Gunma University's Institute of Life Sciences, shared insights on "Managing Common Equipment for Core Facilities and Research Support" through an online connection. His talk focused on problem-solving cases related to managing shared equipment and discussed how certain research support techniques led to published results.

Third Presentation

Finally, Masahiro Fujii, a technical expert from the Equipment Analysis and Plant Animal Resource Technology Division, presented on "Considering Equipment Maintenance." He discussed the evolution of animal testing environments at the Shikata campus, outlining challenges and solutions faced over time.

Following each presentation, attendees engaged in a lively Q&A session, indicating the workshop's success in fostering meaningful exchanges between participants and presenters.

Closing Remarks

After the presentations, Norihito Sato and other professors provided constructive comments on the presentations. The closing remarks were delivered by Yoshihiko Tamura, the head of the General Technology Department, who emphasized the importance of understanding diverse perspectives from the varying presentations. He stated, "In our pursuit of supporting research and education with limited personnel, it is crucial for each individual to act proactively and share personal expertise for the benefit of the entire organization."

Future Directions

Okayama University has participated in the TC College program since 2022, collaborating to train highly specialized technical personnel. From the 2023 academic year, it has opened the Medical Engineering Course as a satellite program, strategically promoting initiatives that leverage its strengths.

The second iteration of the Medical Engineering Studies is planned for this fiscal year, as the General Technology Department aims to enhance collaboration among technical staff across the university and elevate their skills through diverse workshops. The department is committed to strengthening its role as a distinctive research university that contributes to regional and global sustainability.

In alignment with Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology initiatives like J-PEAKS (Joint Promotion of Regional Core and Distinctive Research Universities), Okayama University continues to strategically push for the creation of new values and societal transformation.
