Survey Reveals Most Inspiring Female CEOs for Working Women in Japan

Insightful Survey on Female CEOs

Recently, Knowledge Society conducted a survey focusing on working women across Japan to discover which female CEOs inspire them the most and the reasons behind their choices.

Survey Overview

The survey, conducted online with valid responses from 616 women aged between 20 and 70, aimed to identify the female CEOs that working women aspire to emulate. Respondents chose from 20 prominent female executives and later specified their reasons for their choices from six options.

Key highlights of the survey span a variety of insights, particularly about how different generations perceive success and inspiration in female leadership.

Notable Findings

The results showcased some intriguing patterns:

  • - The most admired female CEOs included Mitsuko Toritani (CEO of Japan Airlines) at 12.0%, Yumiko Takano (CEO of Oriental Land) at 11.0%, and Makiko Ono (CEO of Suntory Food International) at 9.9%.
  • - The rankings exhibited slight variations across different age groups, underscoring the evolving nature of aspirations based on life stages.
  • - Collectively, around half of the responses concentrated on the top five female CEOs, demonstrating clear leadership preferences within the community of working women.
  • - Interestingly, approximately 30% of respondents indicated “other” choices, hinting at a broader array of values and aspirations among women.

Generational Perspectives

The reasons behind the admiration for these female leaders showcased a distinct generational shift. Respondents’ own career trajectories and life stages appeared to significantly influence their answers.

Among the top five most admired leaders, the steady presence of non-hereditary CEOs who have built their careers from the ground up was notable. This trend confirms that many working women perceive these female CEOs as attainable role models, reflecting a shift in societal perceptions towards capabilities over lineage.

As much as the top five took half the votes, the substantial proportion of votes for “other” notable women illustrates a rich diversity of opinions and aspirations among respondents. The survey offers valuable insights into the values and aspirations that influence working women today.
