First MTB Challenge in Toyama: A Thrilling Experience for Beginners
On July 18, 2026, the first MTB Challenge, organized by the Japan Progress Foundation (JPF), took place at the scenic MTB course surrounding the Kuzukawa Dam in Toyama City. This exciting event included a program where almost all of the 11 participants—seven elementary school students and four adults—experienced mountain biking for the very first time. For many families, this day was monumental, marking their introduction to the world of mountain biking.
Starting Off with the Basics
The event kicked off at a designated training area where participants were equipped with safety gear, including helmets and protective pads borrowed from JPF. The training session aimed to equip beginners with essential mountain biking skills. Guided by Jun Matsuo, a former professional MTB rider from JPF, participants learned the different braking techniques and proper riding postures unique to mountain biking.
After warming up and ensuring the bike size was appropriate, attendees practiced fundamental skills like braking and shifting gears on a flat surface, gaining confidence in their abilities. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and encouragement, as everyone tackled the challenges step by step.
Venturing into the Woods
Once the basic training concluded, the group transitioned to the picturesque MTB course enveloped by trees. Matsuo shared crucial tips on navigating the terrain, allowing participants to apply their newly acquired skills on real trails. The course included various challenges such as hills, which many had never encountered before in their regular biking experiences. Feedback from participants echoed their initial fears about tackling slopes, quickly turning into excitement as they mastered the course. One participant expressed, "At first, the hill was intimidating, but I was so happy when I could ride down it!" Families participating together remarked on the joy of sharing this thrilling experience in nature.
Fun and Games
The event didn’t just end with the trail riding. A mini-game called 'Limbo' challenged both kids and adults alike to ride under a bar without knocking it down. Each attempt drew cheers from observers, showcasing the determination of all the participants, making it a highlight of the day. The energy in the air surged as people took on the limbo challenge, fostering a spirit of friendly competition.
Building Community and Connection
The MTB Challenge served as an eye-opener for many attendees who had previously known about the facilities but never utilized them. JPF aims to encourage continual engagement with mountain biking, emphasizing outdoor adventures that allow participants to appreciate the beauty of nature. This event is just the beginning as JPF plans to introduce more activities that facilitate outdoor exploration via MTB, creating lasting bonds in the community.
