Revamping Hiroshima's Lantern Floating Ceremony: A New Creative Collaboration

A New Creative Venture for Hiroshima's Lantern Floating Ceremony

The Lantern Floating Ceremony in Hiroshima, a poignant event commemorating the victims of the atomic bomb, is set to undergo a significant transformation. This ambitious project marks a collaborative effort between the Lantern Floating Committee and Digital Hollywood Studio Hiroshima. The aim is to revamp the event's logo, flyers, and website to reach a broader audience, particularly younger generations and international visitors.

This initiative is being facilitated by Digital Hollywood, which operates an innovative learning style program aimed at fostering diverse lifestyles through digital content creation. The joint project will allow students, graduates, and current participants from Digital Hollywood to showcase their talents in a competitive environment, contributing to the evolution of this historical event. The new designs and related materials are expected to be unveiled in June 2026, coinciding with the ceremony that takes place annually on August 6.

Historical Context of the Lantern Floating Ceremony

The tradition of the Lantern Floating Ceremony originated as a heartfelt tribute by families to honor those who lost their lives during the atomic bombing. Since around 1947, this event has been celebrated on August 6 each year, mainly organized by local businesses in Hiroshima city from 1955 onward. The ceremony has since attracted numerous volunteers, becoming a symbolic peace event for the city.

Since 2015, Digital Hollywood Studio Hiroshima has been actively involved in this initiative by collaborating with the 'Hiroshima Tsugu Ten Project,' which aims to project messages of peace collected from around the world at the site. As the number of individuals able to share their experiences of the bombing declines, this rebranding effort will play a crucial role in conveying the significance of the Lantern Floating Ceremony to new generations as well as tourists.
