Bureau of Reclamation and HeroX Launch the Seal Team Fix Challenge
In an ambitious initiative to tackle critical infrastructure challenges, the Bureau of Reclamation, alongside the crowdsourced solutions platform HeroX, has unveiled the "Seal Team Fix Challenge." This competition is aimed at innovators tasked with developing effective, rapid-sealing solutions for dam conduits that may fail due to mechanical issues or unforeseen debris. With an impressive $575,000 prize pool, the challenge encourages engineers, designers, and problem solvers to present groundbreaking designs capable of safeguarding water and power in the American West.
The repercussions of failing primary gates on water conduits can be severe, potentially releasing uncontrolled torrents of water that imperil public safety and local ecosystems. Christine VanZomeren, Administrator of Prize Competitions at the Bureau of Reclamation, emphasized the vital importance of dependable sealing intervention during such crises. " A robust, quickly deployable seal could prevent a manageable issue from spiraling into a disastrous emergency," she noted. The Bureau has been working for over a century to maintain the integrity of water and power systems across 17 states, through its operation of 330 reservoirs that store an impressive 140 million acre-feet of water.
The Challenge Explained
The Seal Team Fix Challenge invites engineers, inventors, and fabricators from around the globe to design a temporary underwater seal capable of being deployed in conduits ranging from 3 to 25 feet in diameter. Solutions must be adept at withstanding high differential pressures and effectively reducing water flow by 95-98%, all without the aid of non-structural surfaces or trash racks. This high-stakes task highlights the Bureau’s commitment to modernizing water management techniques while ensuring the safety and sustainability of water resources.
The competition comprises three phases: participants will initially submit a concept white paper, followed by a funded prototype build, and culminating in a lab-scale hydraulic demonstration. Up to five finalists can share the total prize money, incentivizing inventive collaboration and technological advancement.
Eligibility and Participation
Individuals aged 18 and older are eligible to enter the challenge, whether as solo competitors or in teams. Participants can be from any country, provided they comply with United States federal regulations. This opens a robust channel for global contributions, sparking creative thinking across borders to secure crucial water resources ultimately supporting countless communities.
HeroX has positioned itself as a transformative force for innovation since its founding in 2013, co-founded by entrepreneur Christian Cotichini and XPRIZE founder Peter Diamandis. The platform proudly champions the idea of leveraging the power of crowdsourcing to address real-world challenges, advocating for a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
By launching the Seal Team Fix Challenge, the Bureau of Reclamation not only seeks concrete design solutions but also aims to foster a deeper engagement with citizens and innovators.
