Workshop to Enhance Teacher-Child Relationships
On July 3, 2026, six nursery teachers from Nakayoshien, a childcare facility at Okayama University, participated in a specialized workshop called "CARE" (Child-Adult Relationship Enhancement). This program aims to strengthen the bonds between children and adults by equipping caregivers with practical communication skills. The workshop incorporates trauma-informed perspectives to help adults interact more effectively with children in their care.
Facilitated by Associate Professor Ayumi Okada and two pediatricians, Dr. Yoshie Shigeiyasu and Dr. Ai Hanzawa, the workshop focused on key techniques such as "specific praise," "repeating children’s words," and "verbalizing children's actions." Participants engaged in role-playing activities to deepen their understanding of building trust through empathetic communication rather than commands or criticism.
One participant commented, "This workshop was an excellent opportunity to reevaluate how we communicate with children. While I have always valued empathy, learning the importance of specific praise has reinforced the notion that acknowledgment fosters children's sense of security and self-esteem."
The significance of maintaining individuality and emotional expression among children in educational settings was highlighted throughout the workshop. Participants noted that creating an environment where children feel 'valued' and 'safe' is fundamental in their development.
Okayama University continues to strive as a hub of innovative research, ensuring collaboration with Okayama University Hospital and similar institutions. This initiative underlines their commitment to enhancing educational practices and, ultimately, the welfare of children in their care. Attendees look forward to further activities and collaborations aimed at improving communication strategies for better educational outcomes.
In promoting a supportive atmosphere for children, the competencies gained from such workshops are expected to enhance daily caregiving practices, laying the groundwork for stronger emotional connections between staff and children. The CARE program not only empowers teachers but also fosters a broader understanding of the critical role that communication plays in childhood development.
Such initiatives underscore Okayama University’s leadership and commitment to diversity and innovation in educational practices, aligning with their goals to implement sustainable and effective strategies across communities. Stay tuned for more updates on workshops and collaborations from Okayama University and its associated institutions aimed at nurturing future generations.
