Exploring the Nature Positive Law: Key Insights from the JPI Seminar

JPI Seminar on the Nature Positive Law

On September 4, 2025, the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) will host an informative seminar focused on the newly enacted "Regional Biodiversity Enhancement Law," set to commence in April 2025. This critical initiative by the Ministry of the Environment aims to promote nature-positive practices throughout Japan, drawing insights from Akihiro Okuda, the Director of the Nature Positive Promotion Office of the Ministry.

Background

The seminar, themed "Key Points of the Regional Biodiversity Enhancement Law," aims to explain how this law will facilitate a paradigm shift towards biodiversity conservation within corporate practices. As of March 2025, the Ministry recognized 328 areas as "Nature Coexistence Sites," reflecting efforts by businesses to preserve the ecosystems within their operational zones. As such, the law aims to further catalyze these initiatives through legal endorsement.

Seminar Outline

The seminar will cover the following key topics:
1. Pathway to Nature Positive Realization
An overview of the historical context and motivations behind institutionalizing nature-positive practices will be discussed, providing a comprehensive understanding of the law's inception.

2. Overview of Nature Coexistence Sites
Detailed information regarding the Nature Coexistence Sites' framework will be shared, including their significance in fostering biodiversity protection alongside corporate activities.

3. Insights into the Regional Biodiversity Enhancement Law
This section will articulate the law's structure, its implications for entities seeking recognition as Nature Coexistence Sites, and the expected outcomes for ecological conservation.

4. Q&A and Networking Opportunities
Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in Q&A sessions, promoting dialogue between industry leaders and participants. This will also facilitate professional networking during the exchange session.

Attendance Options

Participants can choose to attend the seminar in person, via live stream, or through archived access (available for two weeks). The registration fee is set at 37,460 yen per attendee, with special provisions for local government representatives, allowing up to two representatives for only 11,000 yen each, provided they opt for the same attendance format.

Benefits of Participation

This seminar serves as an excellent platform for networking, providing attendees with invaluable insights and connections, potentially leading to new business opportunities and collaborations focused on biodiversity conservation.
