The 2025 Understanding China Conference: Insights into Modernization and Global Governance

The 2025 Understanding China Conference Begins in Guangzhou

The highly anticipated 2025 Understanding China Conference is set to commence on November 30 in Guangzhou, uniting prominent figures from government, academia, industry, and international organizations. This conference, themed "New Plan, New Development, New Choices - Chinese Modernization and New Vision for Global Governance," aims to delve into the significance of China's 15th Five-Year Plan, exploring innovative approaches to modernization, and discussing collaborative actions under the Global Governance Initiative.

A Multifaceted Conference

This three-day event is organized by the China Institute for Innovation and Development Strategy (CIIDS), the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA), and the People's Government of Guangdong Province. Hosted by the Guangzhou Municipal Government, the conference features a comprehensive agenda, including an opening ceremony, keynotes from industry leaders, guest dialogues, four parallel seminars, 19 thematic forums, three dialogues focused on the Greater Bay Area, and five closed-door seminars. Most sessions, except for the closed ones, are open to media coverage, promoting transparency and international communication.

With over 200 international representatives from 72 countries and regions attending—including significant participation from the Global South—this year's event highlights the conference's role as a key platform for fostering understanding of China's modernization successes. Included among the dignitaries are seven former heads of state at a vice-premier level or higher, eleven ministers, and five foreign ambassadors.

Key Themes Explored

The thematic framework of the conference emphasizes four critical aspects:
1. Promotion of the 15th Five-Year Plan alongside an evaluation of the 14th Five-Year Plan.
2. Global impacts of Chinese modernization, exploring how these developments affect the broader international landscape.
3. Highlighting four major global initiatives proposed by China and outlining their contributions.
4. Showcasing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as a successful model for reform and opening up.

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in activities such as the exhibition titled "Guangzhou: A City that Beautifies the World" and urban experiences like "Tasting Guangzhou" and "Walking along the Pearl River." These initiatives invite guests to experience firsthand the vibrant practices that characterize Chinese modernization.

Since its inception in 2013, the Understanding China Conference has established itself as a leading forum for interpreting China's strategies and their global implications. It plays a crucial role in promoting inclusive dialogue in an era marked by profound change. This year promises to continue that legacy, strengthening the platform for voices from the Global South to benefit from China's modernization journey and fostering a community with a shared future for humanity.
