LanzaJet Secures $47 Million in Funding to Propel Sustainable Aviation Fuel Growth

LanzaJet Announces Significant Investment to Advance Aviation Fuel Technology

LanzaJet, Inc., a frontrunner in next-generation fuel technology, has recently announced a substantial funding close of $47 million as part of a targeted investment round aiming for a total of $135 million. With a strong pre-financing valuation of $650 million, this funding round is co-led by prominent industry figures such as the International Airlines Group (IAG) and Shell, among others. The involvement of Groupe ADP, LanzaTech, and Mitsui, all existing shareholders, reflects a robust confidence in LanzaJet’s innovative Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology, crucial for the evolution of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Located in Soperton, Georgia, the LanzaJet Freedom Pines Fuels facility is touted as the world's first fully integrated commercial-scale plant that converts ethanol into aviation fuel. This revolutionary facility represents a significant milestone in the production of renewable fuel that complies with stringent aviation specifications. According to LanzaJet CEO Jimmy Samartzis, the recent investment not only underscores their commitment to the SAF sector but also emphasizes the potential for ethanol to create new economic opportunities.

The additional funding will bolster LanzaJet’s ongoing commercial deployments and enable them to capitalize on a broad portfolio of global opportunities. The infusion of $47 million from this closing, along with a substantial grant from the UK’s Advanced Fuels Fund (AFF) for their Project Speedbird biorefinery in Teesside, reaffirms LanzaJet's position in the renewable energy landscape.

In their latest announcement, Samartzis highlighted that by the end of 2025, LanzaJet aims to achieve full operations and production of ASTM-compliant fuels, marking a historic precedent of utilizing ethanol derived from waste as a feedstock in a commercial facility. This ambitious goal aligns seamlessly with the global need for a scalable and sustainable alternative to conventional jet fuel.

As a part of this funding round, LanzaJet has established a multi-year procurement agreement to utilize low-carbon waste-based ethanol alongside renewable natural gas sourced from regional plants. This strategic move ensures a sustainable supply of feedstock and secures the delivery of all production from their Soperton facility.

Furthermore, LanzaJet has optimized its ownership and governance structure to enhance decision-making processes, driving growth while also positioning itself attractively for potential future investors. As a leading innovator in alternative fuels, LanzaJet’s technology has been recognized by various renowned publications, including TIME and Fortune, for its potential impact on energy security and national goals for decarbonization.

LanzaJet is committed to advancing the aviation fuel landscape, promoting sustainable practices and economic growth. The company’s ongoing efforts not only align with global sustainability goals but also contribute to enhancing energy security. With its cutting-edge technology and the backing of key industry players, LanzaJet is well-positioned to lead the transformation toward a greener future in aviation fuel.
