Ontario International Airport's Toiletries for Troops Program
As travelers make their way through Ontario International Airport (ONT) in Southern California, a new initiative is encouraging them to think twice before throwing away toiletries that exceed the TSA’s 3.4-ounce limit. Instead of discarding those extra-large items, passengers can now donate them to support military personnel through the
Toiletries for Troops program, a generous collaboration between the airport and
USO.
Aiding the Troops
Every time someone heads into the airport's screening area, they may realize they have personal care items such as new tubes of toothpaste or partially used bottles of sunscreen. Traditionally, these items would end up in the trash, contributing to waste. However, the Toiletries for Troops initiative provides an opportunity to prevent this waste and offer crucial support to those who serve in the military.
Passersby can drop off new or gently used toiletries at designated bins conveniently located just outside the TSA screening zones in both terminals. The
USO volunteers promptly collect these donations, ensuring they reach military members traveling through the airport—whether they are departing for duty or returning home.
Supporting Local Veterans
Not only do the donated items assist active service members, but gently used toiletries find a worthy cause in organizations that focus on veteran care.
Seeds of Hope for Veterans, a nonprofit organization co-founded by a USO volunteer, Mike Rogel, works closely with the program to distribute these items effectively within the veteran community.
Heba Shanaa, the Environmental Planner for the Ontario International Airport Authority, emphasizes the environmental impact of this initiative. “This program is a fantastic way to give back to our troops while also minimizing waste that could fill our local landfills,” she stated. The goal is to make passengers feel better about these necessary discards, transforming them into acts of kindness that greatly help our service members.
Meeting an Ongoing Need
Brandi Elias, USO Inland Empire Area Operations Manager, highlights the importance of this partnership. Toiletries are continuously in demand for care packages, especially for troops who have just returned from rigorous training or those heading out for deployment.
Elias noted, “This program allows us to support the well-being of service members during significant transitions, ensuring they have access to essentials that aid in their comfort.” With an increased need for these items, the program ensures that both current military members and veterans receive the much-needed support they deserve.
