As part of its mission to fundamentally resolve child poverty, LFA provides a range of support services for children facing hardships, including learning assistance, community building, and food provision. In recent years, there has been an uptick in societal awareness regarding legacy donations, leading to an increased number of inquiries from individuals expressing their desire to use their inherited assets to benefit children in need. Creating a legal will and executing it involves specialized support, which is made easier through this partnership, as individuals can now be referred to Sumitomo Mitsui Trust's services.
LFA is committed to ensuring that everyone who wishes to support children through legacy donations can do so securely and confidently. They will continue to provide step-by-step guidance in taking this meaningful action.
Understanding Legacy Donations
Legacy donations refer to the act of bequeathing part or all of one's estate to nonprofit organizations or public entities through a testament. This channel allows individuals to contribute their life’s work for the betterment of society, thereby gaining recognition in recent years.
According to the Japan Inheritance Donation Association’s 2024 White Paper on Legacy Donations, the number of executed legacy gifts has tripled over the past decade since 2013, reflecting a growing awareness of the practice. However, a notable challenge remains, as many potential donors are unsure of how to proceed with the necessary legal steps. There is an ongoing need for infrastructure that supports individuals through these processes with expert guidance.
To address these challenges, LFA is advancing programs that connect aspiring legacy donors with specialists in estate management. The signing of this agreement with Sumitomo Mitsui Trust represents a significant step in this direction.
