Kayden Kross Launches Gasplighting
Award-winning director and writer,
Kayden Kross, has recently unveiled an innovative venture titled
Gasplighting. This cultural project is designed to delve into themes of body literacy, intimacy, and the cultural narratives that shape our understanding of these crucial aspects of human experience.
Exploring Cultural Narratives
Gasplighting's aim is not just to entertain but to provoke thought regarding the narratives that society has created around topics such as desire, autonomy, and connection. Kross emphasizes the importance of distinguishing personal experiences from inherited cultural beliefs. Through the project, she encourages audiences to examine how their understanding of intimacy has often been dictated by societal expectations rather than their own lived experiences.
The launch will feature
Deeper, a visually captivating coffee table book that serves as a retrospective of Kross's imaginative work. Additionally, it will manifest in a multi-sensory gallery experience taking place at
Wonzimer Gallery in downtown
Los Angeles on
October 16 and 17. The exhibition aims to create an immersive atmosphere that promotes reflection and dialogue about intimacy.
The Vision of Gasplighting
Kross describes the project as an invitation to question the perceptions of intimacy that are commonly accepted. “Much of what people believe about intimacy isn’t based on their own experiences; it's inherited through culture and expectation,” Kross points out. This highlights the need to reclaim personal autonomy and trust one's lived experiences rather than conforming to societal norms.
At the heart of Gasplighting are significant themes including
- - Body Literacy: Understanding one’s own body is central to fostering a healthy intimacy.
- - Cultural Disconnect: There is often a gap between lived experiences and societal messages about intimacy and pleasure.
- - Emotional vs. Physical: Kross emphasizes that intimacy should be perceived as an emotional and psychological experience, not just a physical one.
These themes will be brought to life through immersive visual storytelling that challenges longstanding shame and silence surrounding intimacy by fostering curiosity and understanding.
Collaborations and Support
The Gasplighting project has attracted support from several brand partners, including
Eat Me Cookies, Banana Split, and the film
Widow. Each partner shares a common goal of exploring modern intimacy, identity, and self-expression. Their involvement will help enrich the gallery experience and create diverse touchpoints for visitors during the exhibition.
As the launch date approaches, Kross and her team will provide further details on the gallery experience, participating brands, programming, and events through their website,
gasplighting.com.
