National Trust Teams Up for Route 66 Film
The National Trust for Historic Preservation has recently announced an exciting collaboration with First + Main Films for their upcoming documentary, titled
Route 66: The Main Street of America. This film is set to highlight the storied history and revitalization of Route 66 as it celebrates its centennial. As the National Engagement Partner for the project, the Trust aims to honor the legacy of this iconic highway while also looking ahead to its future.
A Look Back: Route 66's Enduring Appeal
In the 1990s, filmmaker John Paget embarked on a journey along Route 66 to explore why this decommissioned highway continued to captivate visitors from around the globe. His findings revealed a rich tapestry of preservationists, advocates, local business owners, and highway enthusiasts, leading to the creation of his first documentary,
Route 66: An American Odyssey. This film has since gained traction as it’s screened in various locations throughout the United States.
Now, years later, Paget returns to the Great American Road to capture how this historic route has been preserved and how a new generation of travelers is discovering its charms as it nears its 100-year anniversary.
A Fresh Perspective on Preservation
Rhys Martin, manager of the Preserve Route 66 program at the National Trust, emphasizes that preservation transcends material structures; it embodies the individuals who contribute to the character of each location. "John’s work is instrumental in highlighting the myriad stories along Route 66, illustrating that the corridor's narrative is far more diverse than most people realize," he states. Martin adds, "As we discuss the revitalization of communities through preservation, Route 66 offers both inspiring, successful stories and cautionary tales of loss."
Director Paget reinforces this sentiment, stating, "More than just asphalt and mileage, Route 66 embodies the story of all Americans. As we approach the centennial, it is crucial to showcase how the passion of the people has breathed new life into the route - a testament to resilience and renewal. I hope audiences find optimism and rediscover the spirit that has defined America’s Main Street."
The Rolling Road Show
Set for release in September 2026,
Route 66: The Main Street of America will feature a unique Road Show screening across historic venues from Chicago to Santa Monica. Attendees will have the chance to meet the filmmakers and engage in discussions about the film, while the National Trust will also be present to underscore its commitment to preserving this vital corridor and highlighting the broader narrative crucial to American history.
