A new collaborative project, focusing on the production of processing sweet potatoes, has been launched in Noboribetsu, Hokkaido. Spearheaded by Nippon Steel Kowa Real Estate Co., Ltd. and its subsidiary, Nippon Steel Kowa Real Estate Agriculture Co., Ltd., this initiative aims to create a sustainable agricultural model that relies on local farmers as the main operators.

The project is conducted in partnership with IBURITO, a regional platform aiming for sustainable development in the Iburi area, and Shirohato Food Industry Co., Ltd. The local farmers in Noboribetsu will lead the cultivation of sweet potatoes, while respective companies will provide support in various forms such as planning, practical support, and commercialization expertise.

Background and Objective

Nippon Steel Kowa Real Estate has ventured into agricultural business in December 2025, continuing its longstanding commitment to regional development through real estate initiatives. Following a successful apple cultivation project in Muroran, the company is now looking to diversify crop production by exploring sweet potato farming in Noboribetsu.

Sweet potatoes have recently seen growing demand, especially in processing categories, making this collaborative trial particularly timely. By supporting local farmers and leveraging their expertise, the stakeholders aspire to explore potential branding opportunities for Hokkaido-grown sweet potatoes.

Project Overview

The project spans around 5 hectares of farmland in Noboribetsu, emphasizing the crucial role of local farmers in managing and cultivating the crops. Nippon Steel Kowa Real Estate Agriculture will oversee the project’s overall coordination and logistics among stakeholders.

IBURITO will facilitate local practical support, ensuring that all necessary resources, equipment, and support staff are in place for the local farmers. Meanwhile, Shirohato Food Industry will advise on processing techniques and discuss commercialization possibilities for products derived from the sweet potatoes cultivated.
