Château Margaux Welcomes Aurélien Valance as New Managing Director Following Philippe Bascaules' Retirement
Château Margaux Announces New Managing Director
Château Margaux, one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world, has officially appointed Aurélien Valance as its new Managing Director, effective December 1, 2026. This transition comes as Philippe Bascaules, after an illustrious thirty-year career at the estate, prepares to retire at the end of the year.
A Legacy of Excellence
Philippe Bascaules joined Château Margaux in 1990 and has played a critical role in shaping its reputation. Initially appointed as the Operations Manager, Bascaules advanced to General Manager in 2017 after a five-year stint managing a celebrated vineyard in Napa Valley. His extensive knowledge and experience have been instrumental in maintaining the estate's high standards and legacy.
Continuing his association with Château Margaux, Bascaules will offer consultancy services, particularly during key seasons such as harvest and wine production, alongside Éric Boissenot, a long-standing consulting oenologist with the estate. Alexis Leven-Mentzelopoulos, co-owner and manager, expressed profound gratitude for Bascaules’ decades of commitment, noting his exceptional contributions and personal qualities that have greatly enriched the estate's culture and community.
Meet Aurélien Valance
Aurélien Valance’s journey with Château Margaux began as an intern in 2001, and he has progressively climbed the ranks since then. After completing his studies at HEC Paris and gaining international experience in wine importation, he returned to Château Margaux in 2006 as the Sales Manager. Valance was appointed Deputy General Manager in 2016, overseeing Sales and Operations and was recognized as the French Champion of Blind Tasting the following year. His deep familiarity with the estate’s history and operations positions him well to lead Château Margaux into the future.
Valance’s appointment highlights a culture of continuity and commitment to education within Château Margaux, fostering a seamless transition that aligns with the estate's rich heritage. In regard to his new role, Valance expressed humility and honor, acknowledging the depth of responsibility while emphasizing the strength of the experienced team around him. Together with newly appointed Technical Director Benjamin Vimal and Research and Development Director Blandine de Rouffignac, they aim to maintain the estate's identity while embracing ongoing innovations in vineyard practices.
Preparing for the Future
The leadership change at Château Margaux reflects a broader vision of nurturing talent from within the organization, ensuring that the estate's core values are preserved while adapting to evolving practices in winemaking. Vimal, who joined the estate in May 2026, supervises all technical operations, while Rouffignac’s role encompasses spearheading experimental initiatives that adapt to future challenges in viticulture.
Leven-Mentzelopoulos and Valance share a mutual commitment to preserving the legacy of Château Margaux while anticipating the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow, ensuring that the estate continues to thrive in the competitive world of wine.
As Château Margaux embarks on this new chapter with Aurélien Valance at the helm, the anticipation and excitement around its future remain palpable. With an experienced team in place and a strong foundation built upon decades of excellence, the estate looks poised to maintain its status as a leader in the wine industry.
