The 17th Kagurazaka Rakugo Festival Featuring Emerging Stars of Japanese Storytelling

Get Ready for the 17th Kagurazaka Rakugo Festival

The 17th Kagurazaka Rakugo Festival is set to take place on June 20 and June 27, 2026, at the Akagi Shrine Assembly Hall in Shinjuku, Tokyo. With tickets approaching a sell-out, this event promises to showcase a fusion of traditional storytelling and modern flair.

About the Festival

Nestled in the heart of Tokyo, Kagurazaka is a district that has long been associated with traditional performance arts. During the Meiji and Taisho eras, this vibrant area was home to numerous entertainment venues, which played a crucial role in promoting Japanese folk arts, particularly rakugo. The rich history of Kagurazaka includes famous visitors like Natsume Soseki and hosts a legacy filled with legendary performers such as Yanagitake Kinborou and Kokontei Shinchou, contributing to the explosion of rakugo culture.

In 2009, the Kagurazaka Rakugo Festival was initiated by local enthusiasts, with renowned rakugo performer Kikunojo Kokontei at the helm as the producer. His longstanding commitment to the rakugo community has cemented his reputation as the face of Kagurazaka Rakugo, orchestrating events that capture the unique essence of this artsy neighborhood.

What to Expect This Year

This year, attendees can look forward to an exciting array of performances, including traditional Edo-style rakugo and a special focus on rising star Ichika Tanabe, who is set to achieve the coveted title of shinnuchi this autumn. Under the meticulous curation of Kikunojo Kokontei, the two-day event will feature an interesting blend of rakugo and the art of kodan, enhancing the dynamic of storytelling.

One of the highlights not to be missed is the "Kikunojo and Ichika Two-Person Show" on June 20. This unique collaboration will not only offer a delightful variety of tales but also allow the audience to experience the contrasting yet complementary styles of rakugo and kodan for a truly immersive experience. This performance will be particularly appealing to those unacquainted with traditional Japanese storytelling.
