LINE Yahoo Takes a Bold Step: Satellite Communication Support for 9 Apps Enhances Connectivity in Remote Areas

LINE Yahoo's Groundbreaking Satellite Communication Support

In a significant development, LINE Yahoo Corporation has announced the upcoming integration of Starlink satellite communication across nine of its applications. This initiative aims to provide seamless communication capabilities in areas where traditional carrier signals are absent, such as mountainous regions, offshore locations, or during disaster events. Starting from April 13, users can leverage satellite communication to stay connected, particularly in situations where conventional communication systems fail.

Meeting the Needs of Modern Communication

The modern outdoor lifestyle and the increasing frequency of natural disasters have amplified the need for reliable communication channels in challenging environments. With this innovative approach, smartphones can establish direct links with Starlink satellites, enabling users to access LINE Yahoo applications whenever they are outdoors and have a clear line of sight to the sky.

Supported Applications

The following nine applications will support satellite connectivity:
  • - LINE
  • - Yahoo! JAPAN
  • - Yahoo! Disaster Alert
  • - Yahoo! Weather
  • - Yahoo! Mail
  • - Yahoo! Maps
  • - Yahoo! Transit
  • - Yahoo! Car Navigation
  • - Yahoo! News

Among these, the LINE app will feature a dedicated user interface called Satellite Mode. This mode will simplify the interface to focus on essential functions like sending and receiving messages. However, additional features such as stickers or reaction functions will be unavailable in this mode, ensuring a streamlined user experience under satellite connectivity.

The other applications will operate similarly to their normal functioning but may exhibit reduced speed in satellite communication mode.

Enhancing Outdoor and Emergency Communication

This integration enables effective communication for outdoor activities like camping or hiking in mountainous regions, maritime operations while on ferries, or during emergencies when existing networks may be compromised. Users will now maintain contact with family and friends, ensuring that critical information is accessible in real-time.

How to Utilize Satellite Communication

1. For iOS Users: Go to [Settings] → [Mobile Data] → [Mobile Data Options] and toggle on [Satellite Communication]. (Note: No changes are necessary for Android users.)
2. Launch the appropriate LINE Yahoo app on a compatible smartphone linked to the satellite communication plan.
3. Once in a no-signal area, the device will switch to satellite communication, allowing access to the apps.
4. Accept any prompts regarding satellite data communication to enable app usage.

Important Notes:
  • - LINE will automatically switch to Satellite Mode in satellite communication conditions.
  • - Satellite communication requires a compatible carrier and device, and it should be utilized in outdoor areas with clear skies.
  • - Users may experience lower communication speeds, which might limit some functionalities.

Features Available in LINE's Satellite Mode

  • - One-on-One Chat
  • - Group Chat
  • - Keep Notes
  • - LINE Official Accounts
  • - LINE Open Chat

Currently, only text messages and location information can be sent and received. Media files, stickers, or reactions cannot be exchanged under these conditions.

Timeline for App Support

The rollout of satellite functionality across the supported applications is scheduled as follows:
  • - LINE: iOS & Android starting April 21
  • - Yahoo! JAPAN: iOS starting April 20; Android starting April 13
  • - Other applications (Yahoo! Disaster, Weather, Maps, Transit, Car Navigation, Mail, News) will follow from April 13, varying by app and platform.

Note: The schedule is subject to change.

Commitment to Reliable Communication

LINE Yahoo, guided by its mission of “WOW Our Users!”, aims to establish a robust communication platform that remains reliable, regardless of the external conditions. By integrating satellite communication capabilities, they strive to foster a society where connectivity is assured at all times, enhancing accessibility and information flow even in the most challenging environments.
