Introducing Confidential AI in Semiconductor Manufacturing
The semiconductor manufacturing sector is witnessing a pioneering leap with the advent of Confidential AI, a cutting-edge technology developed by Tokyo Electron (TEL) in collaboration with EAGLYS. Tokyo Electron, a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing equipment, is now entering the technical verification phase for this next-generation AI service, aiming to address the prevalent challenges in data security within the industry.
Understanding Confidential AI
Confidential AI significantly enhances the confidentiality of input and processed data used in AI services. This approach leverages advanced hardware security technologies, such as the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), complemented by AI guardrails, to secure data at multiple layers. Unlike traditional methods where data is simply encrypted and stored, Confidential AI ensures that data remains protected even during processing. This technological framework not only secures the input information but also cryptographically validates that such information does not influence AI learning.
The Challenge in the Manufacturing Sector
As the utilization of generative AI accelerates within the manufacturing landscape, concerns regarding the confidentiality of proprietary technology data remain a significant barrier. Many organizations grapple with the question: Is it truly safe to input confidential operational data into AI systems? Currently, the reliance on terms of service and contracts is insufficient, as there is a lack of technical guarantees regarding data security.
Tokyo Electron aims to remedy this by integrating its extensive semiconductor manufacturing expertise with AI, enhancing operational efficiency and service quality. However, solid assurance that sensitive data is technically safeguarded, beyond mere contractual agreements, is essential for widespread adoption.
EAGLYS's Innovative Approach
EAGLYS plays a pivotal role in this technological advancement by providing Confidential AI solutions that protect data even during AI processing. Their implementation involves operating AI within a hardware-isolated environment (TEE), ensuring that third parties, including service providers, cannot access the input contents. Furthermore, through a verification mechanism known as attestation, users can not only hope for data protection but also confirm it, allowing them to utilize AI services with assured confidence.
Recently, EAGLYS has completed the design phase for applying this technology to TEL's next-generation AI services within generative AI and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems. This innovation follows successful applications of EAGLYS's technology in the chemical industry, particularly through their inter-company data integration product, EAGLYS ALCHEMISTA. Mitsubishi Chemical and Otsuka Chemical have successfully utilized this technology to leverage their most sensitive data, achieving significant reductions in material development timelines by up to one-third.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, EAGLYS plans to support TEL as it transitions from this verification phase to real-world testing conditions for its next-generation AI services. By laying a robust foundation of trust, the aim is to empower various industries, particularly manufacturing, to confidently leverage generative AI with their confidential information.
