Upcoming Webinar on D.C. Law Enforcement Coverage Challenges

On September 5, 2025, the National Press Club Journalism Institute, in collaboration with the D.C. Open Government Coalition, is set to host an informative webinar. This session aims to equip journalists with essential skills and knowledge needed to navigate the complexities surrounding the federal takeover of law enforcement in Washington, D.C. The briefing will commence at noon ET and is open to all interested professionals.

In recent months, the media landscape surrounding law enforcement in the capital has become exceptionally dynamic. Journalists are faced with a barrage of executive orders, numerous public demonstrations, and a continuous stream of press conferences. Moreover, the release of videos often presents conflicting narratives, complicating the task of reporting accurately. This webinar addresses these challenges, offering journalists practical advice on how to effectively gather and contextualize arrest data while ensuring their reports serve the public interest.

The agenda includes insights into public access laws, especially the D.C. Codes pertaining to open government and transparency. Participants will learn the best strategies for acquiring timely and reliable information, including how to effectively interact with the various law enforcement agencies operating in the city.

Expert Speakers

The session will feature distinguished voices in the field:
  • - Robert Becker, board member of the D.C. Open Government Coalition, who will share his expertise on government transparency initiatives.
  • - Fritz Mulhauser, secretary and co-chair of the D.C. Open Government Coalition's legal committee, providing legal perspectives on public information laws.
  • - Elliot C. Williams, Training Manager at the National Press Club Journalism Institute, will moderate the discussion and facilitate audience engagement.

This webinar is particularly valuable for journalists covering not only D.C. but also those in other cities where federal officers might be deployed. With the stakes so high in today’s law enforcement discussions, staying informed is more crucial than ever for journalists. The opportunity to learn directly from experts about best practices and practical tactics will be invaluable.
