New Local Products Featuring Kagura Nanban Launch in Niigata with Students' Ideas

Exciting Launch of Kagura Nanban Products

Seven-Eleven Japan, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has announced the release of four new products utilizing the traditional Kagura Nanban peppers from Yamakoshi, Niigata. These products will gradually roll out in Seven-Eleven stores across Niigata Prefecture starting September 1, 2026. This initiative aims to enhance local engagement while showcasing the rich flavors of Kagura Nanban. The company has a history of introducing Kagura Nanban-based products, but this venture stands out due to the involvement of elementary school students from Ishizaka and Yamakoshi schools.

Together with students, local producers, and franchised stores, Seven-Eleven sought to raise awareness about Kagura Nanban and its benefits. The project included outreach activities like special classes where students learned about the characteristics of Kagura Nanban, the current state of agricultural regions, and issues surrounding food loss. Notably, students had the opportunity to plant seedlings of Kagura Nanban, allowing them to engage in the production process and understand its significance, which directly influenced the latest product development.

Reduction in Food Waste

The backdrop to this initiative resonates with the group’s environmental commitment known as the GREEN CHALLENGE 2050, focusing on reducing food waste and promoting food recycling. Through this project, Seven-Eleven addressed the problem of surplus vegetables that are not typically marketable due to their color change during production. While Kagura Nanban must be shipped in a green state, some peppers turn red and cannot be sold. Seven-Eleven is tackling this challenge by incorporating these non-marketable peppers into their products, contributing to both the product's value and efforts to minimize food waste.

Recognition for Previous Efforts

Last year’s initiatives yielded recognition as they received the FOOD SHIFT Selection 2025 award, an initiative by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries aimed at promoting local consumption of domestic produce. The Kagura Nanban Miso Onigiri was awarded an honorable mention for its commitment to addressing local agricultural issues and collaborating with students on product development.
